School of Philosophy Melbourne
About the Business
Welcome to the Melbourne School of Philosophy, located at 45 Riversdale Road in Hawthorn, Australia. Since 1977, our institution has been dedicated to offering philosophy courses to the curious minds of Melbourne. Our school provides a safe and inclusive space for individuals to engage in deep discussions about existential questions, free from religious dogma.
At the Melbourne School of Philosophy, we believe in the practical nature of wisdom. Our courses are designed to help you further your inquiry into the meaning of life and gain a deeper understanding of yourself. Students have described our institution as a "place to discuss the big questions," a "space to share diverse opinions," and a platform that "opens up different ways to view the everyday." We are a not-for-profit organization that welcomes anyone interested in exploring a greater sense of meaning and well-being.
Drawing from both Eastern and Western wisdom traditions, our approach to philosophy is rooted in practicality. We operate on the principle that the teacher is always a student, and we encourage our students to test the knowledge presented to them in the light of their own experiences. Our courses aim to help you find freedom, happiness, and fulfillment by combining the wisdom of East and West.
Enrollments for our Spring term 2023 are now open, with classes commencing on Monday, September 11th. We offer a mix of face-to-face and online classes, allowing flexibility in your learning journey. In the event of any changes in the pandemic situation, all scheduled philosophy classes can easily transition to online Zoom classes.
The Melbourne School of Philosophy offers courses in Practical Philosophy at various venues across Victoria and online. Our ten-week introductory course, titled 'The Wisdom Within,' is offered three times a year, beginning in January, May, and September. This course explores how the wisdom of both Eastern and Western philosophies can help us find lasting happiness and fulfillment in our lives. While jobs, physical beauty, and financial markets may fluctuate, the benefits of philosophy are enduring and can positively impact your entire lifetime. Discover the truth through your own experience.
Our school has a rich history that began in February 1977 with an advertisement in 'The Age' newspaper. The response was overwhelming, with 150 people attending the first practical philosophy course held at the Scots Church Hall on 2nd February 1977. To this day, some of the original attendees remain involved with our school. Over the years, we have expanded our premises, finding a permanent home at Willard House and later on the top floor of Latham House on bustling Swanston Street.
Today, the School of Philosophy has branches in Melbourne (city), Hawthorn, Croydon, Geelong, Ballarat, and Castlemaine. We are proud to continue our mission of providing a space for individuals to explore the depths of philosophy, gain wisdom, and find a greater sense of well-being. Join us on this journey of self-discovery and enroll in one of our courses today.

Reviews
"Not that good. The group was poorly managed. I am sure there are better philosophy courses than this. Chris Ford must have been joking when he wrote his review here."
"Philosophy begins in wonder - about the purpose and meaning of life and a myriad of other things. Explore the big questions with like minded people, share experiences, and enjoy the good company. It's a rare opportunity to look deeply at yourself, toss out what doesn't serve you, and become your best self."
"I like the School of Philosophy because it presents a non-academic philosophy of life series of classes where you look at life’s big questions including ‘what’s it all about’? People meet in groups where camaraderie is quickly established and friendships are formed. Many people report a sense of ‘coming home’ when they first join the School as they have been searching for something of meaning and have finally found a place where they feel in sync with like-minded searchers. After all, it’s not every day you can have a discussion with someone about the big questions of life! There are no tests to pass I enjoy being part of an organization which is a friendly community where we meet regularly - and we even enjoy home-baked biscuits and cakes at times! "
"Nice people in charge. Well run outfit. My only gripe is the program is a bit rigid, they could probably take it to the next level if the teachers were given more leeway to personalize the program to their own life experience."
"A unique place - not for profit, genuinely interested in wisdom and truth and no agenda. The amount of timeless knowledge available is remarkable. Friends and family have also attended and enjoyed it."
