Gisborne Shockwave Therapy
About the Business
Welcome to Gisborne Shockwave Therapy, located at 71 Hamilton Street in Gisborne, Melbourne's north. Our clinic, situated within the reputable Gisborne Chiropractic Clinic, has been serving the community and its surrounding areas for over 37 years.
At Gisborne Shockwave Therapy, we specialize in providing shockwave therapy for a wide range of conditions. Shockwave therapy involves the delivery of high intensity sound waves to injured tissue, stimulating healing and reducing pain. Unlike regular ultrasound, shockwaves are generated through a special handpiece and come in two main forms: Focused Shockwaves and Radial Pulse Waves. The majority of shockwave therapy used for musculoskeletal disorders is of the Radial Pulse Wave type, also known as Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT).
Our state-of-the-art shockwave machines use compressed air to drive a small metal piece down a metal tube, producing a strong sound wave similar to hitting a drum. With modern machines able to produce 15-21 strikes per second, shockwave therapy is a highly effective treatment option.
Shockwave therapy is believed to work through various mechanisms. In the short and long term, it can provide pain relief by stimulating nerves in the region and potentially through effects mediated by the nervous system in the brain. Additionally, shockwave therapy is thought to "reset" the natural healing mechanisms that occur after an injury, allowing for full healing and resolution of chronic conditions. Unlike cortisone injections, which aim to stop inflammation altogether but can have side effects, shockwave therapy promotes normal healing without weakening muscle-tendon structures.
When undergoing shockwave therapy, it is important to ensure that your practitioner is using equipment that meets Australian Standards and follows a multi-model approach to your care, including rehabilitation and other appropriate techniques.
One of the advantages of shockwave therapy is that most conditions only require 3-5 treatment sessions, spaced no more than a week apart. Each session delivers around 2,500 shocks to the affected area, which can be increased if a larger area or surrounding muscles require treatment. Our practitioners may also combine other treatments, such as rehabilitation techniques or chiropractic techniques, to enhance your chances of recovery. A typical session lasts approximately 20 minutes, although not all of this time is spent receiving shockwave therapy.
Shockwave therapy has been extensively studied in the scientific literature and has shown effectiveness for a variety of chronic conditions that have not responded well to other treatments. However, it is important to note that we do not offer shockwave therapy for erectile dysfunction (ED), as this is typically performed using focused shockwave therapy in specific studies.
Safety is a priority at Gisborne Shockwave Clinic, and shockwave therapy has been proven to be non-invasive and very safe. The most common side effects are mild soreness in the treated area, similar to post-massage discomfort, or rare cases of bruising or redness. Individuals on blood thinning medication or with blood clotting disorders, as well as those with tumors or fresh inflammation in the treatment area, should not undergo shockwave therapy. Pregnancy is considered a relative contraindication, and we recommend speaking with one of our practitioners for personalized advice.
As part of the Gisborne Chiropractic Clinic, which has been operating for over 37 years, our experienced chiropractors have a combined 23 years of experience using shockwave therapy in conjunction with other techniques. We accept most private health funds and can bill them onsite, as well as Medicare. We are registered providers with DVA, WorkSafe, TAC, and more.
If you have any questions about shockwave therapy or would like to discuss your specific situation with one of our practitioners, please feel free to contact us. We are here to help you determine if shockwave therapy is the right treatment option for you.
