About Westgate Park
Welcome to Westgate Park, a stunning establishment located in Port Melbourne, Australia. Situated on Wharf Road, this park is not just your ordinary green space. It is a biodiverse haven that offers a bush-like habitat for both people and wildlife to enjoy.
At Westgate Park, we are committed to promoting biodiversity and preserving the natural environment. Our Westgate Biodiversity initiative, which includes the Bili Nursery & Landcare, focuses on growing and selling indigenous plants. Through our efforts, we are transforming Westgate Park into a thriving ecosystem that supports a variety of species.
One of the highlights of the park is the presence of unique bird species such as the Sacred Kingfisher and the Boobook Owl. These birds prefer to nest in tree hollows, which are unfortunately becoming scarce. To address this issue, we have launched the Hollows for Habitat project. This initiative involves conducting tours, field trips, and monitoring events to create and protect tree hollows for these magnificent birds.
Exciting news! Starting from January 1, 2026, the management of Westgate Park will be taken over by the City of Melbourne. This transition will ensure the continued care and preservation of this remarkable natural space.
Victoria's wetlands have suffered from clearing and drainage over the years, resulting in the loss of aquatic species. However, at Westgate Park, we strive to reverse this trend. We offer excellent stocks of Rhagodia candolleana, also known as Seaberry Saltbush, a semi-succulent scrambler that is perfect for hedging and enhancing wetland areas.
Looking for a unique gift? Surprise your friends or family with a voucher from Westgate Park. They can choose from our wide selection of lovely indigenous plant species that are sure to add beauty and biodiversity to any garden.
We are proud to have recently showcased our stall at Victoria Harbour for the opening of the new garden beds on the concourse. Our display was a hit, highlighting the diversity and beauty of native plants.
In addition to plants, we also offer high-quality terra-cotta-colored plastic pots filled with carefully selected plants that are perfect for balcony gardens. These pots are a great way to bring nature into urban spaces.
Every year, we conduct bird surveys to monitor the population and diversity of bird species in the park. Despite challenging conditions, our dedicated surveyors have always had a wonderful time, discovering rare and exciting species.
Your support is crucial to our work in preserving the environment. Donations to Westgate Park are tax-deductible and contribute to our ongoing efforts in conservation and biodiversity.
We are proud to collaborate with various organizations, including Melbourne Bushfood, Parks Victoria, Port Phillip EcoCentre, Landcare Australia, Conservation Volunteers Australia, City of Port Phillip, City of Melbourne, and The Heart Gardening Project. Together, we are working towards a sustainable and biodiverse future.
As we embark on our journey, we acknowledge and respect the traditional custodians of the land, the Yalukit Wilam clan of the Boon Wurrung language group. We value our ongoing relationship with the Boon Wurrung Foundation and support the adoption of the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
We would like to thank our generous sponsors, including National Australia Bank, MIRRAT, Telstra, PWC, Link, Lion, ANZ Bank, IBM, KPMG, Pana Chocolates, Boeing, BASF, and Goldman Sachs, for their support in our mission to create a sustainable and biodiverse environment.

Reviews of Westgate Park
"Westgate Park is an exceptional park located in the industrial heart of Port Melbourne. It offers a range of attractions and activities that make it an ideal destination for visitors seeking a green oasis close to the city. The park's location on the eastern banks of the Yarra River, under the Westgate Bridge, offers spectacular views of the river mouth and the city skyline. One of the most remarkable features of Westgate Park is its salt lake, which turns pink seasonally due to high salt levels, high temperatures, increased sunlight, and lack of rainfall. The reddish algae growing in the salt crust is a sight to behold, particularly during hotter weather. The park's shared paths are popular with cyclists, joggers, and walkers, and connect to some significant trail networks of Melbourne, including the 53km Bay Trail. Visitors can take the unsealed trails that wind past lakes and wetlands to see the park's plants and animals, as well as the Earth Series Sculptures. These artworks by Lyn Moore are made from natural materials and add to the unique landscape and character of Westgate Park. The park also offers a free shared electric barbecue facility, making it an ideal spot for picnics and gatherings. Westgate Park is home to a variety of bird species from around the world, and the lake is a great place to observe wading birds such as stilts, ibis, and spoonbills feeding on the shores. The park is part of an Aboriginal cultural landscape in the traditional Country of the Bunurong People, adding to its historical and cultural significance. Overall, Westgate Park is a wonderful destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Its unique features and attractions, coupled with its proximity to the city, make it a must-visit spot for anyone looking to explore Melbourne's natural beauty."
"You could be in the middle of nowhere in the Australian bushland here - beautiful natural setting with grassy tracks that all of a sudden open out to view the busy Westgate Bridge - an amazing sight with the wetlands in the foreground. I’m so proud that Melbourne has these diverse places preserved for everyone to enjoy."
"Cool park that remains a bit wild with a variety of small and quirky monuments. The phenomenon of the pink lake happens when it is very hot, with sunny days without rain. The salt lake turns pink because of the natural interaction of a green alga, in response to a very high salt levels, temperature and light. This alga grows in the salt crust at the bottom of the lake and produces a red pigment (Beta-carotene). The colour intensifies as the water evaporates in summer heat and salt content increases. Very rare phenomenon!"
"A park with salt water lake and fresh water lake... was hoping to see Pink Lake but was not forming the pinkish for several years... the toilet was quite dirty, and apparently, someone would graffiti on the park... please keep the park clean for everyone to enjoy it..."
"A fairly large park and well maintained. You can get here by car, bike or walk. It has a few places you can sit and relax, it also has a lot of different trails to go down and explore. Pretty nice retreat from the nearby metropolis next door."
