About Fingal Picnic Area
Welcome to Fingal Picnic Area, located in Cape Schanck, Australia. This establishment is not only a park but also a point of interest and a popular tourist attraction. Surrounding areas worth exploring include the historic Cape Schanck lighthouse precinct, the stunning ocean beaches of Sorrento and Portsea, the rugged Flinders coastline, and the wildlife haven of Greens Bush.
At Fingal Picnic Area, you can enjoy a peaceful picnic just two kilometers north of Cape Schanck. This area was initially subdivided for housing but was later repurchased by the government between 1974 and 1977. The site offers various facilities, including electric barbecues, toilets, tables, and a ball games area. Nearby walking tracks lead to lookout points with breathtaking views of basalt cliffs and Fingal Beach, which is revealed during low tide. Please note that access to the beach is via a steep staircase, which may not be suitable for visitors with limited mobility. Alternatively, a longer 5-kilometer walk to the northern Gunnamatta Beach is also available from the Fingal Picnic Area.
For a truly serene experience, visit Bushrangers Bay, a sandy beach surrounded by dramatic basalt cliffs. This location offers a striking contrast between the peacefulness of the bay and the wild waves crashing against the jagged rocks guarding its entrance. You can access Bushrangers Bay through Main Creek from the Boneo Road car park and picnic area, which is approximately 2.5 kilometers away. Along the way, you'll be treated to stunning views and pass through shady Banksia groves.
If you're looking for a beach adventure, Sorrento Ocean Beach is the place to go. Located about 1.5 kilometers south of the town of Sorrento, this beach is a hotspot for activities such as surfing, swimming, walking, and exploring rockpools during low tide. For your convenience, the site offers a large car park, picnic area, toilets, and a café and kiosk that caters to functions and weddings. Please remember to swim between the flags, as ocean beaches can be dangerous for swimming.
To enhance your visit to Mornington Peninsula National Park, we recommend downloading the park's visitor guide, which provides detailed information about the park and the multitude of experiences it offers.
Parks Victoria strives to make parks accessible to people of all abilities. Reviews of Fingal Picnic Area
"A quiet and peaceful picnic area with plenty of tables and a clean toilet! It was also really close to the beach and lookouts, a nice resting place for couples and families."
"Fingal is the quintessential mix of woods, foreshore scrub, and ocean views. You drive up the long access road to the well-equipped picnic area to park. Then it's a short walk back to the steps to the track to take you to the cliff top, where magnificent views are presented at myriad vantage spots along the walk. Well worth the rrip, and you come back to the picnic area for a repast. Suitable for all ages."
"Pine tree forest that looks like a movie set, very beautiful place. Toilets and bbq’s available"
"Nice secluded rocky beach. Bit of a steep walk from car park to beach. Not ideal for young kids because not much sand there, however, perfect for scuba diving and fishing."
