About Biosciences 2
Welcome to BioSciences 2, located in the vibrant city of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. As a renowned establishment and point of interest, we are proud to be a part of the University of Melbourne's prestigious School of BioSciences.
At BioSciences 2, we are dedicated to addressing major scientific and societal problems in biology through our expertise in ecology, evolution, molecular and cellular biology. Our academic staff are highly experienced and have diverse research interests in the fields of plant science, genetics, and zoology.
We offer a wide range of subjects, courses, and research projects, providing our students with a comprehensive education and the opportunity to delve into their specific areas of interest. Our strong links to the community are evident through our various programs, collections, regular events, and publications.
One of our notable facilities is Australia's largest university herbarium, which houses an impressive collection of around 150,000 specimens of flowering plants, ferns, bryophytes, algae, and fungi. This herbarium also contains historic botanical objects and artwork, showcasing the rich history and diversity of plant life.
Additionally, our collection of zoological specimens, dating from the 19th century to the present, is a valuable resource for research and education. It includes a wide variety of animals, both vertebrate and invertebrate, providing a comprehensive understanding of the animal kingdom.
To support our students and staff, as well as the wider community, we offer state-of-the-art electron and optical microscopy equipment. This enables researchers to explore and analyze biological samples with precision and accuracy.
We are proud to have the Botany Foundation and the Native Australian Animal Trust associated with BioSciences 2. The Botany Foundation focuses on excellence in education and research in botany, addressing issues related to the use of plants, the environment, food security, and nutrition. The Native Australian Animal Trust offers a platform for individuals passionate about Australia's wildlife and their environments to connect with and support our research, teaching, and engagement activities.
As you explore our webpage, you will be captivated by the stunning banner photo captured by David Clode. It features a neon cuckoo bee on a coral vine, showcasing the beauty and diversity of the natural world that we are dedicated to studying and protecting.
We invite you to learn more about our institution, our research, and the opportunities we offer for postgraduate research study options at the BioSciences MSc and Honours information and research poster session. Join us on Friday, September 8th, from 1-3pm to hear firsthand about the exciting possibilities that await you at BioSciences 2.
