About the Business
Welcome to Hung Gar Yau Shu Martial Arts School, the most versatile performing Asian Arts school in Melbourne, Australia. Located at Nunawading, Rooks Road, 137-145, our establishment is a point of interest for individuals seeking a unique and enriching experience in the world of martial arts.
At Hung Gar Yau Shu (HGYS), we offer a diverse range of activities to cater to different interests and skill levels. With five different streams of training, our classes are designed to accommodate beginners as well as advanced practitioners. We pride ourselves on being a family-friendly institution, where everyone is made to feel welcome and supported.
Our experienced instructors hold Working with Children certification and are First Aid Trained, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all our members. With a focus on traditional Chinese martial arts, HGYS practices the southern Fat San lion dance style, incorporating elements from Chinese martial arts as its foundation. Additionally, our Spirit of the Lion drum team showcases the art of traditional Chinese drumming and Japanese Taiko.
For those interested in martial arts, we train in two main disciplines: Hung Gar Kuen and Jujutsu. These disciplines not only teach self-defense techniques but also promote discipline, physical fitness, and mental well-being.
If you're looking for a more meditative and holistic practice, we offer a weekly Tai Chi class that focuses on building strength through solo and partnered activities. This one-hour class is designed to improve balance, flexibility, and overall wellness.
The story of Hung Gar Yau Shu began in 1986 when seven friends in Melbourne decided to train in Lion Dance, Hung Gar Kuen, and Jujutsu. Their passion and desire to share their knowledge led them to establish our esteemed institution. Over the years, we have expanded our offerings to include Taiko performance drumming, Dragon Dance, and Tai Chi. Today, we have over 50 active members and continue to grow year after year.
In addition to our regular classes, we also provide lion dance, dragon dance, drumming, and martial arts performance packages. With full Public Liability coverage, including Chinese Firecracker coverage, you can trust us to deliver a safe and memorable performance for your special occasion. Whether you're celebrating a wedding, hosting a corporate event, or participating in multicultural festivals, HGYS has the expertise and experience to make your event truly remarkable.
Our lion dance blessings are a culturally significant way to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits. We also have a strong tradition of representing the Chinese community in multicultural events, offering options for parades, stage performances, and stall interactions.
For weddings, our performance features two lions symbolizing the union of the bride and groom, adding a touch of tradition and excitement to your special day. And if you're looking to entertain your employees and guests, our dynamic lion dance, dragon dance, and drumming performances are sure to leave a lasting impression.
Join us at Hung Gar Yau Shu Martial Arts School and immerse yourself in the rich traditions and vibrant performances of Asian arts. Experience the power, grace, and camaraderie that our institution has to offer.
