Curious about the battery manufacturing process? Let us give you a glimpse into how it all comes together. It begins with the production of a plastic container and cover, typically made of polypropylene. The case is divided into six sections, resembling an ice-cube tray, and the cover is sealed onto the container upon completion.
Next, lead or an alloy of lead and other metals is used to create grids or plates, which are essential for conducting a charge. A mud-like paste mixture of lead oxide powder, sulphuric acid, water, and additives is then applied to the grids.
To prevent short circuits, separators made of thin, porous, insulating material are placed between the positive and negative plates. These separators allow electrical current to flow while maintaining a barrier between the plates.
The elements, consisting of a positive plate, a negative plate, and a separator, are dropped into the battery cells within the case. The cells are connected with a conductive metal, usually lead, and the terminals or posts, also made of lead, are welded on. Finally, the battery is filled with electrolyte – a mixture of sulphuric acid and water – and the cover is securely attached.
The last step in the process is charging. The battery is connected to a power source and charged for several hours. This charging process transforms the paste in the positive plate into a different form of lead oxide and the paste in the negative plate into spongy lead. Once the battery is fully charged, it is ready for the market.
