John completed his medical training at the University of Sydney in 1981 and began his specialist training at Westmead Hospital in 1983. He also held a prestigious breast cancer fellowship position at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute at Harvard University from 1987 to 1988. He established his radiation oncology career at Sydney's Westmead Hospital and became the founding director of the Western Breast Screening Unit and the Westmead Breast Cancer Institute. In 2011, he was appointed as the director of the cancer program at Macquarie University and established the internationally recognized Australian Lymphoedema Education Research and Treatment (ALERT) program, where he continues to serve as an honorary consultant.

In August 2019, John joined Icon Cancer Centre along with specialist radiation therapist, Lesley Baker. Together, they have developed, published, and mentored clinicians about Volumetric Arc Radiation Therapy (VMAT) radiation techniques for patients with breast cancer. The aim of VMAT is to enhance cancer control while minimizing high doses to normal tissues, resulting in fewer side effects compared to conventional radiation. They work collaboratively with patients to develop personalized solutions tailored to their unique needs, allowing them to continue working and caring for their families during this challenging phase of their lives. In addition to breast cancer treatment, John and the Icon team provide patients with information about nutrition, exercise, prevention and early detection of lymphoedema, body image, sexuality, follow-up care, and psychological support.

John has published over 180 clinical research articles in leading publications, focusing on breast cancer and lymphoedema. He has also authored three "Taking Control" books on breast cancer, male breast cancer, and DCIS for patients. He is frequently invited to speak at national and international conferences, patient support groups, the McGrath Foundation, and Breast Cancer Network Australia. His expertise is highly valued, and he is regularly requested to peer review breast cancer and lymphoedema journal articles.

In recognition of his significant contributions to medicine, particularly in the field of radiation oncology and his dedication to people with breast cancer, John was awarded an Order of Australia (AM) in January 2017.
