About Fitzroy Community School
Welcome to Fitzroy Community School, located at 597 Brunswick Street, in the vibrant suburb of Fitzroy North, Victoria, Australia. As an independent, alternative primary school, Fitzroy Community School prides itself on its unique approach to education.
At Fitzroy Community School, we believe in putting "People Before Things," which is not just a motto, but the very spirit that defines our institution. Our school operates in a relaxed atmosphere, where children are not only eager to learn but also excited to come to school every day. Visitors often comment on the warm and welcoming environment that feels like an extended family.
One of the distinguishing features of Fitzroy Community School is its commitment to keeping the roll size similar to that of a large, extended family. With this deliberate choice, everyone knows each other, and every individual feels valued. Our school is not just another institution; it is a place where students and staff form deep connections and foster a sense of belonging.
Our primary aim at Fitzroy Community School is to provide our students with three key outcomes: happiness, viability, and academic excellence. We firmly believe that these qualities lay the foundation for a fulfilling and engaging life. The culture of our school is designed to support the development of these qualities, and we are proud to see our students and graduates exemplify them.
Central to our approach is the emphasis on confidence and effective communication skills. Rather than being explicitly taught, these skills are learned through the daily lifestyle of the school. Students are encouraged to express themselves, collaborate with others, and develop their unique abilities.
Fitzroy Community School was founded in 1976 by Philip O'Carroll and Faye Berryman in their home on Brunswick Street. Today, we are fortunate to still have their commitment and experience as we continue to provide an exceptional education to our students. In addition to our main campus, we also have a second location on Normanby Avenue in Thornbury.
We invite prospective parents to come and experience the Fitzroy Community School for themselves. Please reach out to us to schedule a visit at a mutually convenient time. You can find more information about our school, including videos showcasing our community, viability, happiness, and academic achievements, on our website.
Join us at Fitzroy Community School, where education is more than just academics – it's about creating a nurturing environment where students thrive, grow, and become well-rounded individuals.

Reviews of Fitzroy Community School
"Helped me learn to read but lots of the teachers where terrible especially at the brunswick street campus. With the principal being a right wing manipulative regressive man who removed some of our most important and progressive classes like Computer programming and media. Although they are very good with teaching responsibility and english but not individually. As a former student this school has helped me and mentally destroyed other people. As their support system does not exist."
"IF YOU PLAN ON ATTENDING THIS SCHOOL READ THIS!!! Look, I went to this school for 6 years before moving to Sydney. It was great. I got a lot out of this school. I did have a few problems with particular teacher and their patience but I am so happy that I went to this school. This schools have TWO CAMPUSES right. Normandy and Brunswick. Brunswick I went to for 5 years and yes I got a lot out of it but I was bullied and made fun of for being me throughout the whole time. After moving to Normandy for the last year I was there I realized that that was the place that I was meant to be at. Everyone knows everyone because of how small it is and yes there the occasional drama but nothing people can't deal with. The TEACHERS ARE INCREDIBLE and so kind and make sure that you feel welcome and that you know and understand what you are doing. They teach in a way that makes you feel good and you get to work at your own pace so you can't really fall behind. This school challenges you to be who you want to be. There is a LOT OF FREEDOM given here. Not only is there NO UNIFORM but they make you lunch and recess and snacks through the whole day. There is woodwork and lots of arts and activates you can do throughout lunch, recess and FREE PERIODS. This school have an amazing, supportive community Overall this school is amazing if you look past its few flaws and focus on all the good. I hope you consider this school and turn your kids into open minded, brilliant, intelligent and straight up incredible people xx Grace - Former student of Fitzroy Community School for 6 years. Now in Year 8 living in Sydney."
"A unique independent village sized community school with 70 students. Pragmatically run by the same family for over 40 years, it’s an amazing primary school experience. The focus is on happiness, community and viability, and a strong English, Maths, Art, Language, Music and Sport programs mean they’re well rounded and always rank highly in NAPLAN. Our kids love going here, and get great experience and build confidence going on nature camps, getting out and about and learning the importance of community. A quality and well rounded education with wonderful teachers and staff who genuinely care and foster a culture that lives the school motto - People Before Things!"
"My experience of Fitzroy Community School has been uniformly inspiring, creative, and original over twenty years both as parent and guest poet. The intimacy of the school means everyone gets to know everyone. It is an ideal environment for introducing poetry and creative writing to young minds. The poetic imagination, new ways of seeing the world and talking about them, informs how things work at FCS. It always surprises me what the students do with words, who am but the agent for their personal expressions of wonder."
"I attended this school from 1986 - 1992. What a great experience! I have also worked there off-and-on over the years, and now my 3 children attend. Couldn't be happier!"
