About the Business
Welcome to RMIT University Flight Training - Building 450, located in the City of Wyndham, Point Cook, Victoria, Australia. Our institution is a renowned establishment and a point of interest, offering world-class flight training facilities and a unique learning environment.
Situated at the historic Point Cook Airfield, the oldest operating airfield in the world and the birthplace of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), our institution has a rich aviation heritage. Point Cook was Australia's first military air base and is also home to the Royal Australian Air Force museum, providing students with a truly immersive experience.
At RMIT University's Point Cook site, students have easy access to diverse airspace, varied terrain, and urban development, maximizing their navigational experiences. Our flight training facilities consist of a modern, purpose-built pilot training complex, located at the former home of the RAAF No 1 Flying Training School.
The flight training program at RMIT University encompasses both single-engine aircraft, such as the C172S Cessna Skyhawk and C182T Cessna Skylane, and aerobatic aircraft like the 8KCAB Super Decathlon. Additionally, our students have the opportunity to complete the optional instrument rating in the Frasca 242 flight simulator and the twin-engine PA44-180 Piper Seminole.
Practical flight training takes place at Point Cook Airfield, conveniently located just 25 kilometers southwest of central Melbourne. With 4500 feet of airspace above the airfield, our students enjoy unrestricted training maneuvers, minimizing congestion and delays. This unique advantage allows for more take-offs and landings per hour, enhancing training efficiency.
The Point Cook Airfield training environment is strategically positioned, offering access to various types of airspace and variable weather conditions created by nearby mountains, the sea, and the city. This setting enables trainees to develop the confidence and capability to handle command under a variety of operational conditions.
Point Cook itself is a picturesque area along Victoria's Port Phillip Bay, bordered by the stunning Cheetham Wetlands and Point Cook Coastal Park. As the home of the world's first military air base, it also houses the Royal Australian Air Force Museum, located right next door to RMIT's Flight Training Centre.
The City of Wyndham, where Point Cook is located, is a popular tourist destination for both local and overseas visitors. The region boasts major attractions, including the historic Werribee Park Mansion, State Rose Garden, Werribee Open Range Zoo, and the National Equestrian Centre.

Visitors can take the Metro Werribee Line train to Williams Landing Railway Station and connect with bus service 497, which will take them to the RAAF Base. Bus connections are also available from Melbourne International Airport and Avalon Airport, with SkyBus Avalon Airport Transfers dropping off at the nearby Werribee RSL.

"Great school to learn anything..."
"Completed my CPL and MECIR over the allocated 2 years. Had a fantastic experience with quality instructors, both whom have now moved on to airlines. I appreciate the high standard expected, especially with regards to Standard Operating Procedures, which I believe has prepared me well for the wider industry, especially charter and airline work. It certainly wasn't easy, with lots of ups and downs, but ultimately hard work pays off in a very rewarding way, and the course will require full-time commitment to succeed. I'm now completing my Instructor Rating and looking forward to a strong future in aviation."
"Great place to start flight training, location is brilliant with multiple classes of airspace around point cook. All staff are friendly and instructors have a great deal of knowledge. The senior instructors and testing officers are extremely experienced. Really great place for flight training with fantastic links to airlines"
"The Biggest reward of my life. Recently I finished my Associate Degree and was offered employment as an instructor the following week. This University course is like any other, you get out what you put in! Hard work and effort is rewarded, not just with good grades but scholarships, fly-away trips and employment opportunities. It is expensive, just like every other flight school but when investing so much money into yourself you need to support it with hard work to make the returns of the invest worthy. Other great things is the location at the RAAF base Point Cook, the friends I've made here, the solid banter and the staff are very helpful especially when I had family concerns in another state. Training and working under some of the best CFIs in the country is a honour and having their names on references for my next endeavour is a real privilege."
