Pioneers Memorial Park Norton Street, Leichhardt, New South Wales 2040
About the Business
Welcome to Pioneers Memorial Park, located in Leichhardt, Norton Street, Australia. This institution holds historical significance as it was formerly known as the Balmain Cemetery, where over 10,000 burials took place representing 24 different religious denominations. The majority of these burials occurred before December 1908, making it a significant resting place for pioneers of the district.
In 1941, the cemetery was renamed Pioneers Memorial Park as a tribute to the pioneers and now serves as a serene and peaceful recreational area for future generations to enjoy. The park features a memorial dedicated to the brave service people of Leichhardt who lost their lives during World War 1 (1914 β 1919), as well as the Bicentennial Rotunda.
For those visiting with their furry friends, Pioneers Memorial Park also offers a designated dog on and off-leash area. You can find a map of the area on our website.

Reviews
"A nice park with lots of green space and a newly renovated playground. The playground is pretty good, with a water play and a variety of equipment for a range of ages. On Norton Street, this is a great meet-up spot for a picnic or for kids to recharge before a dinner."
"This park is the centre of the local community and an oasis of fresh air. The green space is well-maintained and it's even got its own water park now."
"Interesting playground construction. Suitable for kids of all ages. Toilets nearby. Good amount of shade. Ample street parking."
"Great park close to restaurants on Norton. There's a new playground that has many parents up in arms (too unsafe!!!), but my grandkids and I find it a little lame compared with the area's best parks."

The site was 3 hectares and had 10,608 burials from 24 different religious denominations all but 126 burials took place prior to December 1908 the cemetery closed permanently in 1912.
