Melbourne Jazz Co-operative
About the Business
Welcome to the Melbourne Jazz Co-operative, located at 16 Geel Street in Bentleigh, Australia. As a not-for-profit organization, our mission is to support and promote original live jazz performance by both established and emerging artists in Melbourne. Since 1983, we have been dedicated to increasing the exposure of contemporary jazz and providing performance opportunities for talented musicians.
At the Melbourne Jazz Co-operative, we believe in making jazz accessible to audiences. Our venue operates as a bar, establishment, night club, and point of interest, creating a vibrant and intimate space for jazz lovers to gather and enjoy live music. Whether you're a jazz enthusiast or simply looking for a unique night out, our establishment offers a memorable experience.
Please note that due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, our venues have implemented Covid-safe requirements. When booking tickets, we kindly request that you familiarize yourself with the safety measures in place to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
We are excited to present the Melbourne International Jazz Festival concert in partnership with the MJC. This year, the concert titled "Stranded" was written for the North Sea Jazz festival's annual commission. It reflects the experience of being stranded in Australia due to the country's closed borders during the pandemic. With special guest Cuban percussionist Juan Carlos Allende, the performance will showcase original tunes inspired by rare Afro Cuban, African, and Sri Lankan grooves. Prepare to be enchanted as Julien Wilson, Robbie Belchamber, Ray Pereira, Quinn Knight, and Ash Howell create harmonies, melodies, and interlocking polyrhythms.
Join us in celebrating the latest offering from I Hold the Lion's Paw, a quartet with three highly acclaimed albums. They will be showcasing their limited edition 7" released by Brisbane label Made Now Music. Meanwhile, Montreux Jazz Award nominees Brekky Boy return after their sold-out show at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival last year. Fresh from their European and UK tour, this Sydney-based trio will be launching their latest EP, promising an unforgettable performance.
Pianist, composer, and arranger Katarzyna Wiktorski's Quintet project is a fusion of jazz, classical, and improvisation. Following the release of her lockdown octet EP "From a Distance," Wiktorski's compositions aim to create a unique blend of genres. Immerse yourself in the rich and diverse sounds of her quintet.
Trumpet player and composer Callum G'Froerer presents his new quartet project, featuring Joe O'Connor on piano, Sam Anning on bass, and James McLean on drums and cymbals. With a repertoire that ranges from detailed harmonic and rhythmic structures to spacious collective textures, this ensemble will perform new pieces for their upcoming recording, as well as music from 'Space Available'.
In addition to live performances, you can support Australian artists by purchasing their recently released albums. Many musicians recommend using Bandcamp for its reasonable fee structure and generous Bandcamp Fridays when they waive their revenue share. Don't forget to explore our rich array of past releases and important classic albums, such as the late Mark Simmonds' 1995 ARIA winner, "Fire."
We would also like to take a moment to honor the late Lynette Irwin, who made an immeasurable impact on the Queensland and Australian jazz scenes. Her legacy will forever be remembered and cherished by the jazz community.
As an organization, the Melbourne Jazz Co-operative proudly adopts the WeHaveVoice Collective Code of Conduct, ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all musicians and attendees.
Funding for the Melbourne Jazz Co-operative comes from a variety of sources, including state and federal programs, as well as contributions from our valued members. By becoming a member, you not only support our organization but also demonstrate to funding and governing bodies the importance and value of live, original jazz performance.
Join us at the Melbourne Jazz Co-operative and immerse yourself in the vibrant and soulful world of jazz. Experience the magic of live performances, support talented artists, and be a part of a community dedicated to preserving and promoting this cherished artform.
