About the Business
Welcome to Newtown Dojo, a renowned institution located in New South Wales, Inner West Council, Newtown. As an establishment dedicated to health and well-being, we proudly promote the sport of judo in the Sydney Metropolitan Area, Newtown, and the surrounding suburbs.
At Newtown Dojo, we firmly believe that diligent practice of judo provides invaluable physical and mental benefits. Our training sessions focus on improving fitness, strength, coordination, balance, and dexterity. Moreover, judo enhances concentration, self-discipline, and confidence, providing a solid foundation for self-defense.
Conveniently situated at Coronation Hall on 95 Lennox St. Newtown, our central location is easily accessible and close to public transport. We strive to create a supportive community by coordinating activities with relevant sporting and martial arts organizations, fostering social networking opportunities for our members.
Ensuring the utmost safety and ethical conduct, Newtown Judo Club has implemented a comprehensive Member Protection Policy and Code of Conduct. Our club, instructors, and members are fully insured, and our instructors possess current Working with Children clearances.
As a traditional Japanese martial arts dojo, Newtown Judo Club also teaches ju-jutsu and karate, in addition to judo. Operating under the auspices of Lotus Dojos Australia, which has branches at Engadine and Thirroul, our primary aim is to preserve and promote traditional forms of martial arts. We proudly teach Kodokan judo, the style founded by Jigoro Kano at the Kodokan Judo Institute in Tokyo. Additionally, we preserve the cultural and physical roots of judo by teaching traditional Japanese ju-jutsu.
Our dojo provides carefully tailored tuition in a safe environment for both men and women. Our main objective is to deliver quality instruction in traditional Japanese martial arts by strengthening the connections between dojos, instructors, and students. To further enhance our teaching capacity and promote cultural exchange, we regularly organize visits to Japan. Our most recent visit took place in December 2015.
Our highly skilled instructors have been taught by Patricia Harrington, a 6th Dan Judo practitioner who founded Sosuishi-ryu Australia in 1965. Ms. Harrington began studying ju-jutsu under the late Shusaku Shitama, the 15th inheritor of Nippon Sosuishi-ryu, in 1964. Furthermore, she has studied judo under the legendary Kyuzo Mifune (10th Dan) and Keiko Fukuda (10th Dan), making over 27 trips to Japan to further her studies. Ms. Harrington continues to provide expert tuition at Engadine and regularly visits Newtown Judo Club to share her knowledge.
Join us at Newtown Dojo and embark on a journey of physical and mental growth through the practice of judo, ju-jutsu, and karate. Experience the rich cultural heritage and benefits these traditional Japanese martial arts have to offer.
