About the Business
Welcome to Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve, located on Sydney's stunning northern beaches in Manly. This remarkable institution encompasses approximately 20 hectares of natural beauty, including the entire bay, rocky shores, and beaches stretching from the southern end of Manly Beach to the northern end of Shelly Beach Headland.
Originally established as an Intertidal Protected Area from 1993 to 2002, Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve continues to thrive and flourish. Adjacent to the reserve, you'll find the Shelly Beach Headland Intertidal Protected Area, further enhancing the ecological significance of this remarkable location.
The aquatic reserve boasts a diverse range of habitats, including sandy beaches, rocky shores, rocky reefs, kelp forests, seagrass beds, sandy seabeds, and open water. These habitats provide a haven for a wide variety of marine life, ranging from common temperate species to tropical species that migrate southward along the East Australian Current (EAC). Visitors to the reserve can encounter an array of fascinating creatures, including dusky whaler sharks, blue groper, cuttlefish, wobbegong sharks, seadragons, elegant wrasse, and black rockcod.
The rocky shore within the reserve offers an abundance of habitats, each showcasing unique marine life. From platform and crevice habitats to rock pools, boulders, and cobble habitats, the diversity of species is awe-inspiring. Over 50 species of marine invertebrates have been documented within the reserve, further emphasizing its ecological significance.
Beyond its ecological importance, Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve is a popular destination for recreational activities. Whether you're interested in walking, beach-going, swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, underwater photography, or boating, there's something for everyone to enjoy. It's important to note that this is a 'no take' Aquatic Reserve, meaning fishing, harming marine animals or plants, and collecting marine organisms is strictly prohibited. "Beautiful scenic place , take a ferry from Circular Quay, 20 mins to Mainly and a few minutes walk."
"Amazing spot. Even though it was winter, kids and I regretted not having our swimming gear. Would have jumped in for sure despite the cold. A truely beautiful place.. I envy those who come in summer. Close to a must visit I think. Short trip on the ferry, which is an experience in itself. Wow."
"Awesome mini walk. 10-15 mins chill walk around. Weather was very sunny today but the sea breeze make the walk enjoyable as there were many thing to walk and observe"
