About The Pines Campground
Welcome to The Pines Campground, located in the beautiful Olney State Forest in the City of Lake Macquarie, New South Wales. Situated amidst the stunning Watagan Mountains, this campground is a perfect destination for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers.
Olney State Forest is a popular visitor area, bordered by Wyong State Forest, Watagan State Forest, and Watagan National Park. Together with Heaton State Forest, Olney State Forest forms the main area for visitors to State Forests on the Central Coast. In fact, the State Forests of the Watagan Mountains have been recognized for their excellence in Adventure Tourism, winning the Gold Award in the Hunter Central Coast Tourism Awards for three consecutive years. This achievement has earned them a place in the Tourism Hall of Fame. Additionally, they have received various other awards and accolades, highlighting their status as a top tourist attraction.
The forests in this area have a rich history of timber harvesting, spanning over a century. However, today's forest management practices prioritize sustainability and conservation. The regrowth forests you see today are a testament to these efforts, with a focus on protecting biodiversity, soil and water quality, and cultural heritage sites.
The Pines Campground offers a range of facilities and activities for all visitors. The Abbotts Falls Walking Track, starting from the Pines Picnic Area, takes you through a diverse landscape of dry eucalypt forest, moist gullies of bluegum and rainforest, and offers stunning views from Abbotts Falls Lookout. Another delightful walk, the Rock Lily Walking Track, begins at the Basin Camping Area and showcases the beauty of rock lilies, geebungs, and ferns. It traverses through a rainforest gully, climbs into dry eucalypt forest, and even intersects with the Great North Walk.
The campgrounds themselves are nestled amidst the natural beauty of the forest. The Casuarina Camping Area provides comfortable accommodation for caravans, trailers, and individual campers, while the Basin Camping Area offers open grassy sites with easy access to a flowing creek. Turpentine Camping Area, surrounded by beautiful turpentine trees, is an ideal spot for smaller groups or families. Each camping area has its own unique charm and amenities, including nearby toilet facilities.
For day visitors, the Old Mill Picnic Area offers a wide and flat grassed area perfect for family sports, with the forest as a picturesque backdrop. Olney Headquarters, named after its previous use as a forestry building, provides a great rest stop with camping, barbecues, picnic tables, and toilets, including disabled access facilities.

Reviews of The Pines Campground
"Plenty of sites to choose from. Drop toilets - frequently without toilet paper. LOUD! Went in May on a regular weekend and had campsites partying and setting off fireworks"
"It’s a bit rowdy and bit, even though it’s not a public holiday. You should probably bring your own firewood too as with the number of people coming through, you’ll struggle to find any at the camp ground. On the plus side, it is a nice spot, the lines trees are beautiful and there are some walking tracks with some nice little waterfalls. Also being close to Sydney, it’s a good spot to duck out for a quick camp trip that doesn’t involve a 3-4 hour drive."
"Beautiful and peaceful place to stay and camp, plenty of space and privacy"
"Awesome campground, we had a lot of fun spending the weekend here with friends. It only has a pit toilet so you need to bring water to use and to drink. Lots of walking trail around to explore. Will definitely come back to this spot. It’s free, but it wasn’t that crowded when we went on the last weekend of May."
"Great campground. Not far from sydney. But toilet is bit smelly."
