About the Business
Welcome to the Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering (AINSE), located at Lucas Heights, New Illawarra Road. AINSE is a prominent establishment and point of interest in Australia, dedicated to enhancing the capabilities in nuclear science, engineering, and related research fields.
One of the exciting programs offered by AINSE is the annual AINSE Women in STEM and Entrepreneurship (WISE) School. This school provides a fantastic opportunity for first-year undergraduate women in STEM to network with peers from across Australia and New Zealand. They also have the chance to hear from special guest speakers who share their inspiring journeys to successful careers in STEM. A unique aspect of the WISE school is the active participation in an ongoing mentorship program involving the WISE students, past alumni, and staff members from ANSTO and AINSE. If you're interested, please visit our WISE School page for more information and to apply. Applications close on September 30, 2023.
From October 16th to 18th, AINSE will host its annual Postgraduate Orientation Week, which will be conducted entirely online. This event coincides with the international Nuclear Science Week celebrations. The orientation week is open to the new cohort of 2022 AINSE Scholars and interested students enrolled at AINSE-member institutions who intend to apply for an AINSE Honours or postgraduate scholarship in 2024. Attendees will have the opportunity to listen to talks and panel discussions by ANSTO research leaders and AINSE alumni. They can also embark on a virtual tour of ANSTO hosted by the ANSTO Discovery Centre. Interested students will also attend a specialized workshop focused on the application process for 2023 AINSE scholarships. To learn more and apply for the orientation week, please visit our O'Week page. Applications close on September 30, 2023.
In July, AINSE hosted the twenty-seventh annual AINSE Winter School, where 67 students from 30 Australian and New Zealand universities had the unique opportunity to connect with leading ANSTO researchers. This online week provided an exceptional platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration.
The excellence and impact in research were recognized through the awarding of AINSE Scholar Gold Medals to Dr. Rhiannon Boseley (Curtin University) and Dr. Gemeng Liang (University of Wollongong). Following the award ceremony, a special networking dinner brought together representatives from the Australian nuclear science and technology sector, AINSE and ANSTO Boards, and various organizations.
AINSE is proud to welcome Professor Janice Aldrich-Wright as a new Board Member, representing Western Sydney University. Her appointment from January 1, 2023, follows the completion of Emeritus Professor Bill Boyd's term on the AINSE Board. AINSE expresses gratitude to Professor Aldrich-Wright and all Board Members for their ongoing service to AINSE and its member organizations.
It is with deep sadness that AINSE informs the scientific community about the passing of Mr. E.A. (Bill) Palmer in September 2022. Mr. Palmer served as the first Scientific Secretary/Executive Officer of AINSE from 1959 to 1988 and made an enormous contribution to Nuclear Science and Engineering.
AINSE offers a range of programs and services to its members, including generous support for domestic and international conferences, scholarships for honours, postgraduate students, and Early Career Researchers. Additionally, AINSE provides intensive undergraduate education schools to foster scientific advancement and promote effective collaboration between AINSE members and ANSTO.
We would like to respectfully acknowledge the Dharawal nation as the traditional custodians of the land on which AINSE is located.
