Kokoda Track Memorial Walk
About the Business
Welcome to the Kokoda Track Memorial Walk, located at Tremont, Tree Fern Gully Track in Australia. This establishment is not only a point of interest but also a popular tourist attraction. The memorial walk starts from Ferntree Gully Picnic Ground and takes you on a journey through lush rainforest, following a steep hill along a creek. As you make your way up, you'll be surrounded by the beauty of nature, eventually reaching a clearing where you can enjoy breathtaking views of Melbourne through the trees. To complete the loop, take the Lyrebird Track back to the carpark.
Fitness walkers and tourists are drawn to this path due to its steep yet stunning terrain. However, please note that this walk is not suitable for pets, so it's best to leave your furry friends at home. Dogs are not allowed at the 1,000 Steps.
After your walk, visit the 1000 Steps Cafe, located under the tranquil gumtrees of the Dandenong Ranges. Start your day with a delicious coffee while immersing yourself in the picturesque surroundings of the national park. The cafe offers a great range of food and drinks, all of which can be enjoyed indoors surrounded by locally-produced artwork or outside in the large outdoor area with picnic tables.
To fully appreciate the magic of the 1000 Steps, it's advisable to visit during quieter times such as midweek or early mornings. This way, you can truly soak in the atmosphere of the rainforest and understand why Australian soldiers found it reminiscent of the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea, where they fought during the Second World War. Keep an eye out for the elusive Superb Lyrebird, known for its shy yet noisy nature.
If you're not set on walking the 1000 Steps, there are alternative options available. The Ramblers Track Loop offers a gentle and quiet walk through old-growth forest, allowing you to admire the majestic trees around Ferntree Gully. For a similarly demanding walk or run, consider trying the Granite Track in nearby Lysterfield Park, where you can even cool off with a swim in the lake afterward.
The 1000 Steps Walk holds significant historical value, with signs at the foot of the steps explaining its association with Australian soldiers. Originally created in the early 1900s, the walk was made easier with the use of tree fern trunks. Over time, wooden palings and eventually concrete steps were installed. In 1998, veterans of the Kokoda campaign designated this park as their memorial site. Fourteen plaques along the walk pay tribute to the Australian Military Forces who fought and lost their lives on Kokoda. The 1000 Steps represent the 'Golden Staircase,' referring to the steps cut by the Australian Army Engineers between Uberi and Imita Ridge.
Please note that the car park at Ferntree Gully picnic area tends to fill up quickly, especially on weekend mornings. Consider parking at One Tree Hill Picnic Ground at the top of the 1000 Steps or taking a leisurely stroll from Upper Fern Tree Gully train station, which is approximately 1200m away. Don't forget to download the visitor guide for more information before your visit.
Parks Victoria aims to make parks accessible to people of all abilities, and various facilities are available to assist visitors with disabilities. Accessibility assessments were conducted in June 2020 for Grants, O'Donohue, Sherbrooke, One Tree Hill, and Ferntree Gully picnic grounds, providing detailed information and photos.
Assistance dogs are welcome in Parks Victoria parks and reserves, even in areas where dogs are usually prohibited, such as national parks. However, entry requirements still apply.
Please note that conditions in nature can change at short notice, so it's recommended to check this page for any updates before your visit.
Finally, we acknowledge the Aboriginal Traditional Owners and their ongoing connection to the land. These parks and reserves hold significant cultural value, and we recognize and respect their role in caring for Country.

Reviews
"A popular rainforest track The track is not far from a train station. It has a big parking lot but I can imagine it will be crowded on a good day. I started the Kokoda track to go up and took the Lyrebird down, as Kokoda is one way. I recommend the Kokoda up because it has staircases. The staircases are well maintained with rails and many small stops to take a break. Finishing the track is definitely an exercise. Along the way, enjoy some views, history lessons, the natural sounds of a small stream, bird spitting, and the fresh air of a rainforest. There is water on top and toilets at the parking lot. The cafe at the parking lot is also good."
"The effort you put in to get up the 1000 steps is worth it. Even if only for the view you get when you get to the top. Not exactly the easiest of walks, so pack your walking shoes. Lovely break from the hustle and bustle of the city. Enjoy the quiet that nature has to offer."
"Amazing scenery. 1000 steps was a challenge due to its elevation. We made it to the top and that was an achievement. Once committed, you can only go up. The weekend was a bit crowded but achievable. Would prefer a quieter climb to fully appreciate my surroundings."
"Nice walk, even with kids. We went with a few families, and we had 4 year olds and older making it all the way up and down. We also had a couple of babies being carried in a carrier by their dads. As there isn’t much sun it stays quite wet and at times slippery. The top of the 1000 steps is an anticlimax and no great view. There are a couple of better views on the way up and down. At the base of the hike is a nice playground and toilet facilities. Parking was very full on a public holiday but luckily we found one right away."
"I love this trail. It's still doable in rainy/winter days but thrives in summer/spring. Is hard enough for a seasoned hiker, but also easy enough for someone looking for a small challenge. I'd recommend coming in the early afternoon for less crowds though"
