About McCrae Homestead
Welcome to McCrae Homestead, one of Victoria's oldest and most historically significant homesteads. Located in McCrae on Beverley Road, this establishment serves as a captivating point of interest and a must-visit tourist attraction for history enthusiasts.
Built in 1844 by Andrew and Georgiana McCrae, the homestead stands as a remarkable example of drop slab construction, showcasing the architectural techniques of the time. The homestead was sold to the National Trust in 1970 by Georgiana's great-great-great grandson, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
Situated on Bunurong Country, the homestead is part of the Arthur's Seat Run, spanning an impressive 33 square miles (8,296ha). The McCrae family was among the first six pioneer families to establish properties on the Mornington Peninsula, making their mark on the region's history. Georgiana, a talented artist and dedicated diarist, played a significant role in the design of the homestead.
The Visitor's Centre at McCrae Homestead delves into the fascinating relationship between the McCrae family and the local Bunurong families, as documented in Georgiana's diaries. This exploration of cross-cultural connections adds depth and richness to the visitor's experience.
Following the McCrae family's departure, the Burrells, a dedicated farming family, resided at the homestead from 1851 to 1926. Their contributions to the Mornington Peninsula region are highlighted, showcasing their impact on the local community.
The Visitor's Centre also features galleries displaying the McCrae's art and memorabilia, as well as photography, artifacts, and objects from the Burrell-Twycross family. The Burrell-Twycross Gallery offers a glimpse into the pre-War Mornington Peninsula through captivating black and white photography by John Twycross.
We are proud to offer the McCrae Cross-Cultural Education Program, which provides an immersive and educational experience for school excursions. Students can engage with the rich history and cultural significance of the homestead, further deepening their understanding of Australia's past.
Admission prices to McCrae Homestead are as follows: National Trust members enter for FREE, adults for $10, concession for $7, children for $4, and families (2 adults 2 children) for $26.
As we honor the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Victoria, we recognize their enduring connection to the land, water, and communities. We pay our respects to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, as well as to Elders past and present.
Discover the captivating story of the Mornington Peninsula and the Burrell-Twycross family who farmed at Arthur's Seat. Dr. Will Twycross, a descendant of the Burrell family, shares the story of his family's legacy and the launch of the Gallery at McCrae.

Reviews of McCrae Homestead
"As locals we have been meaning to visit this homestead and learn more about the area. Really lovely experience made better by Trudy who welcomed us warmly, and gave us a tour filled with fascinating information."
"Absolutely amazing! Sally and Malcolm were so informative and friendly."
"A beautiful, well presented and well maintained doorway to our local historic bygone era. Informative and knowledgeable guides."
"Have zero consideration for people who live in close vicinity of the homestead and their environmental impact both in terms of noise and diesel engine fumes . Ongoing issue with school buses idling their engines for excessive amounts of time for absolutely no reason. Today bus was idled from 1.03pm until 1.32pm yet no children have boarded the bus. Weather today is overcast and 19 degrees not exactly hot or cold for that matter. Have discussed with the homestead and council yet still continues to be an issue. Will contact the EPA and councillors at the shire."
"Wonderful staff, very informative. Have been there more than one occasion. Although was a hot day, they stayed to accommodate us. I strongly advice you take your child to step back in history! Thank you ladies!"
