Reviews of CASA DO BENFICA
"Hidden away in the tennis club don’t let the dated interior put you off. This restaurant is home to some of the best Portuguese food you will find in Sydney. Try the bacalau (salted cod) or meat skewers which hang over the table. Lots of seafood options on offer like cuttlefish or octopus paired with delicious potatoes dripping in garlic and salad. Bread bowl is regularly topped up which you need to soak up sauces. The friendly barman will always offer good cheap recommendations often of Portuguese wine or drink the locals beer Super Bock. Bookings essential here at the weekends. Book a tennis court for the kids to keep them busy while lingering over dinner. Book an outdoor tables if you want to bring your dog."
"Two stars because the waiters was at least apologetic about the delay for the food, although she said that it’s always like that because they have a small kitchen and one chef only. Food wasn’t good, way too salty (and I usually enjoy salt). Caldo verde badly had any sausage, just two. Pork was greasy and beef skewer undercooked and chewy (bad quality meat). Food was way too pricy for its quality. The above, along with extremely long waiting time to both go to our booked table (no one would come talk to us when we arrived) + an hour of wait for the food made it a bad experience. The ambience isn’t great either - old place, kind of falling apart, blue ceiling lights. There are better Portuguese restaurants nearby…"
"Came here as a group of 6 and shared a seafood platter, beef skewer, bacalhau, some sides and a few different desserts. Seafood was good and platter top notch! Beef skewer was a little tough so definitely preferred the seafood. Platter is quite large so can definitely feed 3 people easily. Service was a bit confusing- took us a while to figure out whether we had to order from our table or at the counter. Other than that friendly staff and great for families. Drinks are cheap and food prices reasonable."
"Very casual dining setting in the back of a community tennis centre. Grilled seafood platter is extremely good - savoury bomb full of fresh seafood flavour, well seasoned and drenched in olive oil. Prepare to leave stuffed! Seafood rice was good and slightly spicy but definitely needs bread since it’s a bit salty. Portuguese steak can be skipped, it’s pretty much a minute steak with no char. Also be prepared to wait as output is quite slow and the venue reasonably full."
"I'm glad we found this gem. Entry from the car park is via a narrow path towards the tennis courts. The restaurant is casual with a touch of old school club charm. All white table linen & fresh bread roll baskets. Our water was friendly and helpful. Suggesting dishes and wine. Unfortunately, the dish we wanted to try was only available on weekends. Highlight was the Alvarino wine, Vongole Clam, Garlic Mushrooms & Seafood rice. Very authentic Portuguese cuisine. The caramel flan was not our favourite, though. Recommend bookings as we dinned on a Friday and it was a full house. Looking forward to coming back on a weekend to try the special."
