About Malthouse Theatre
Welcome to Malthouse Theatre, located at Southbank, Sturt Street, 113 in Australia. As a multi-faceted institution, we offer a unique blend of entertainment and culinary delights, serving as a bar, cafe, establishment, and a point of interest.
We take great pride in our achievements, having been honored with four Green Room Awards, including Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Performance. Our productions are thought-provoking, daring to challenge the commercialism and consumerism that often overshadow the holiday season. The demand for our shows has been overwhelming, with the first three weeks already sold out. However, we are thrilled to announce that new tickets are now available for performances through to 3 December.
At Malthouse Theatre, we not only strive to captivate our audiences on stage but also behind the scenes. We invite you to support us through a donation and become a part of our Supporter Community, ensuring that our behind-the-scenes action remains as vibrant and exciting as the works you witness on our stages.
For over 40 years, Malthouse Theatre has stood as a beacon of creativity, offering a refreshing alternative to mainstream entertainment. We proudly showcase bold new Australian works, nurture emerging artists, and take risks that push boundaries both on and off the stage. As Melbourne's home of provocative theatre, we guarantee that every visit will leave you with something to say.
We also provide a glimpse into the captivating creative processes that unfold behind the curtains. From commissions to artist residencies, we are committed to fostering and developing talent, ensuring that the Australian arts scene continues to flourish.
Supported by the Victorian Government, Malthouse Theatre will undergo a significant upgrade that will span until 2023. This investment will enable us to further enrich the theatrical experience we offer, ensuring that our venue remains at the forefront of artistic innovation.
As we embark on this journey, we would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land, the Kulin Nation, on which Malthouse Theatre stands. We respect their sovereignty and their Songlines, paying homage to their Elders and their Children. We are proud to embrace and celebrate the oldest culture in the world.
Join us at Malthouse Theatre, where thought-provoking performances, delectable food and drink, and a commitment to artistic excellence converge to create an unforgettable experience.

Reviews of Malthouse Theatre
"The atmosphere is great. We saw a live show in the outdoor theatre area. Staff are friendly. Food is very expensive for what you get, but it was nice. Drinks prices are what you would expect. The show was awesome."
"Beautiful outside venue! Great on a hot evening with friends, date or even by yourself. Plenty of tables but get there early to grab a good table."
"What a great spot! Went recently for a body positive Taking up space event. The stage is set up great with beautiful fairy lights strung across from the stage to the back of the seating. Inside bar was reasonably priced, although food was a bit too expensive for what we received ($8 chips / $7 burger drinks from $7) *Cashless venue* All in all a good experience and would happily return."
"This is one of the iconic theatre experiences in Melbourne. I'd you haven't had a chance to get out and experience the outdoor theatre such fun and engulfing experience. And drink and eat. It's fantastic. Thanks to all involved in bringing theatre back."
"If your into performance and theatre, this is an experience you definitely don’t want to miss out on. Something so incredibly different and innovative you wouldn’t have seen before. Because The Night is a theatre show loosely based on Hamlet, however instead of the actors performing traditionally on a stage, they perform alongside you in rooms, where you are able to explore, walk through and watch at your own leisure. You cannot touch the actors and they cannot touch you, they simply perform like you aren’t there. Different scenes are performed at the same time, and you start by entering either the Gymnasium, Bedroom or Office (chosen at time of booking). No phones or bags are allowed in, so the inside remains a mystery to you. You are given a mask and a cape to wear, and you must remain silent as you explore the rooms. We were astonished by how many rooms there actually were, we didn’t even get to see them all in the 90 minutes. We seemed to be fish out of water and a little confused as what we were meant to be doing, my advise is to follow the actors, and not delve too much into each room looking for answers to the story as we did. Enjoy the show, we highly recommend it! Tickets can be purchased from the Malthouse Theatre website and were $120pp. Only 60 audience members per show."
