Reviews of Nilgiri's
"This was a low-key dinner with another couple that surprised me pleasantly on all fronts. Service was attentive and appropriate with the owners present and lovely. The food was light and delicious, we took advice to try the paneer with the prawns and chicken. Don’t leave without the sticky rice and a glass of port. We will be back."
"Overall we were unfortunately left disappointed after visiting. Everything was OK, but we expected a lot more, especially given the cost of the meal. The restaurant was busy for a Wednesday evening, which was great to see, but it was super loud in there and the tables were really crammed in. There was only two of us at our table so it wasn't too bad, but we saw a group of 4 people sat around a table the same size of ours which must have been really awkward. We heard cutlery and other items fall off tables multiple times, presumably due to the lack of space. Waitresses were also having to move quite awkwardly between tables. It all needs a rethink from a layout focus. Soft furnishings are also needed to reduce the noise - multiple times there were difficulties in hearing by ourselves and the waitress due to the volume. The food was the main disappointment though. To start we had keerai vadai which was incredibly bland with a tart dipping sauce. For mains we had a chicken kuruma which was really bitter and a paneer which was very oily. The Pilau Rice was weirdly glutenous (like sticky rice) and didn't have any flavour. The weirdest item though was the peshwari naan which wasn't really a naan but seemed to be two bits of dense oily bread (paratha?) stuck together with a filling, rather than the light and airy bread I'd expect. The cost was high as well - $94 for a below average meal. We were full after our meal but weren't satisfied at all. We would not recommend the tasting menu either as the amount of food would just be overwhelming. Also, trying to charge $14.50 for poppadoms and dips is taking the mick."
"This is not your typical curry house, Nilgiri's present elevated and nuanced Indian food and the best way to experience it is by ordering one of their tasting menus. The menu changes seasonally to focus on a different region or community of India which means you always get something a little different but the quality is always superb. Such a great family run restaurant that we have visited many times over the years and we are never disappointed."
"Nilgiri's is not your average Indian restaurant. What is done with the food here is a cut above the rest. Even in well-known dishes, spice mixes or ingredient combinations can surprise. Take the samosas with cabbage... super tasty but quite unusual. The raita tasted wonderful, though we could not put our finger on exactly what gave the special flavour. We also enjoyed the coconut chutney with the papadums. My wife really enjoyed the soft naan. The goat was tasty, tender and fell off the bone. The lamb pieces too had good spice - we thought we could taste some clove... very yummy! As noted by many others, the butter chicken was also fantastic. All of the food was served with the non-vegetarian banquet meal. Food was served at a good pace and service was very friendly and efficient. .... We shall return!"
"Nice little restaurant. Can tell that they are trying to present Indian food in a fine dining way. However some innovative dishes just didn't taste exciting as their looks. And food was kinda really bland. The way they treat the protein was good. Most of the meat are really tender. Highlight was the butter chicken. It doesn't taste like the normal one, it is milder and sweeter. Service was good, price was high. One time restaurant."
