Karloo walking track
About the Business
Located in Royal National Park, the Karloo walking track is a must-visit establishment and a popular tourist attraction in Australia. Offering a moderate walk, this delightful track provides visitors with the opportunity to enjoy swimming, picnicking, and breathtaking views of waterfalls, all just south of Sydney.
Before embarking on your journey, it is advisable to check the weather conditions, as the track can become boggy during rainy periods. However, for those seeking a quick nature fix, Karloo walking track is conveniently located just a short drive or train ride away from Sydney. This medium-level walk begins at Heathcote train station and leads to the scenic Uloola Falls in the north-west section of Royal National Park.
As you traverse this moderately challenging track, you will pass through picturesque heathland, encountering the beautiful Karloo Pool along the way. This popular swimming and picnic spot may tempt you to take a refreshing dip before continuing your journey. Additionally, keep an eye out for the unique 'whaleback' rock outcrops, named for their resemblance to whales surfacing for air. The intriguing Uloola Turrets, with their fascinating rock formations, are also worth exploring.
Upon reaching Uloola Falls, take a moment to relax and enjoy a delightful lunch beside the cascading waterfall. The nearby Uloola Falls campground is a popular spot for visitors. However, if you plan to extend your stay and make it a weekend getaway, it is advisable to book your accommodation online in advance. You have the option to either return the way you came or take the Uloola walking track to Waterfall Station.

Additionally, using Google Street View Trekker, we have captured stunning imagery of various NSW national parks and attractions, providing you with a bird's eye view of these incredible landscapes before embarking on your own adventure.
Furthermore, the Karloo walking track is part of the conservation and coastal engravings project in Royal National Park. This project aims to preserve one of the region's finest expressions of Aboriginal culture, the Jibbon Headland Aboriginal engravings. A new boardwalk and viewing platform have been constructed to limit foot access that was previously damaging the engravings. Additionally, efforts are being made to remove encroaching soil and vegetation to further protect this significant cultural heritage.
Whether you are a nature enthusiast, an avid hiker, or simply seeking a peaceful and scenic getaway, the Karloo walking track in Royal National Park is the perfect destination. Immerse yourself in the beauty of Australia's natural landscapes and experience the rich Aboriginal culture preserved within the park.

"Did the walk from Waterfall train station to Heathcote station, along the uloola fire trail and then Karloo pools walking track. Did it on a dry day in April 2023. It's not one I would recommend. It's about an hour from Central station by train. There are no really interesting views along the way. The pools themselves are nice enough but not worth a four hour round trip from Sydney (2 hour train, two hour walking). The national parks website said it was a level 3 (moderate) but when you get there the signs said level 4 (hard) - which it was The track was waterlogged and muddy for significant sections. Lots and lots of steep step-ups and step-downs. I had waterproof hiking trainers, but my full-on hiking boots would have better if I'd know it was a grade 4. I don't mind a tough hike if the rewards are worthwhile. But this was just tough and uninteresting (for me anyway. I appreciate that others may get more out of it). I like walks with fantastic views (forest, coastal, mountain, whatever). This was just walking on a fairly bland fire trail from Waterfall station to the pools, then from the pools to Heathcote on the narrow Karloo track through thick bush, with no views, where you have to look down and watch your feet most of the time anyway. Definitely not for me. Give me the blue mountains, or spit/manly coastal walk any day."
"Beautiful track for a nice hike. Not too difficult, the track down though is quite steep."
"Definitely a slightly challenging walk, but, well worth the effort. Recommended for couples, groups of friends, small families (kids who can ideally walk already). Not recommended for wheelchairs, older folk with walking issues, or for taking your mother-in-law on (unless you get on well with each other). The pools at the end are delightful, so get your good shoes on and get walking!!"
"A great bush walk close to Sydney. Steep in parts with a few large rocks, the long walk snakes along a water runoff path to a fresh water pool. 8hr parking is available near the entrance and no permit is required."
