About Heritage Holiday Houses
Welcome to Heritage Holiday Houses, located in the beautiful Woolwich area of New South Wales, Australia. Our establishment is a unique lodging option that offers a glimpse into the rich history of the region. Set amidst lush gardens on the upper island, our beautifully restored dwellings were built circa 1913 and offer a charming and comfortable stay for our guests.
One of our main attractions is the outdoor barbeque and entertainment area, which boasts stunning views across to Hunters Hill. It's the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a delicious meal while taking in the picturesque surroundings.
We have two distinct holiday houses available for your stay. Cockatoo Overboard is conveniently located near the Visitor Centre on the Eastern Apron, while Marina Café & Bar is situated in the historic Docks Precinct. These locations provide easy access to the island's amenities and attractions.
For campers, we offer pre-purchased BBQ packs that can be prepared using the campground kitchen. Please note that the café requires at least 48 hours' notice to prepare BBQ pack orders, so be sure to order well in advance. To order a BBQ pack, simply click here. Please keep in mind that Cockatoo Overboard is not affiliated with Cockatoo Island Accommodation, so any changes to your campground booking may affect your BBQ pack order.
If you're traveling with a larger group, we offer bedding for up to 4 additional guests. This can be added to your booking at the 'Optional extras' screen of our online booking platform. Additionally, we provide other paid extras such as additional cleaning services, high chair and cot hire, and Cockatoo Overboard BBQ packs. Remember, BBQ packs must be preordered at least 48 hours prior to your arrival.
Our Heritage House gardens are also available for bespoke functions, making them the ideal venue for events of up to 50 people. Fees apply, and for more information, please view our Hire Agreement for Event Bookings.
Please note that due to their heritage nature and location on the upper plateau, our Heritage Houses are not wheelchair accessible and may not be suitable for individuals with difficulty climbing steps. If you require a more accessible option, please email stay@cockatooisland.gov.au to discuss alternatives.
When packing for your stay, remember to bring your own food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and personal items. Our check-in time is from 3pm, and check-out is by 11am.
To make your stay even more convenient, we offer meal options at our family-friendly venues, Cockatoo Overboard and Marina Café and Bar. These venues operate daily and are licensed to serve alcohol. You can also pre-order BBQ and breakfast packs ahead of your stay to prepare at your accommodation.
Getting to Cockatoo Island is easy, as the best way to reach us is by public ferry. The F3 and F8 services operate daily, departing from Circular Quay and Barangaroo, as well as from various wharves along Parramatta River. For further information on how to visit us, please see our website.
Before your stay, we recommend familiarizing yourself with our accommodation terms and conditions. If you have any questions about using our online booking platform, we have a helpful 'How to' guide available.
The Heritage Holiday Houses hold a fascinating history. In 1914, the Naval Board of the Federal Department of Defence approved the construction of these residences for essential dockyard staff. Completed in 1916, these semi-detached dwellings on the island's plateau overlook the waterfront campground on the Northern Apron. Their architectural style is predominantly Federation Arts and Craft, with influences from the Queen Anne Style.
The first occupants of these houses were Dr. Thomas William Francis, the island's Medical Officer, and Jack Payne, the dockyard's Engineering Manager. Dr. Francis served from 1914 until his death in 1918, while Payne held the position of Engineering Manager from 1912 to 1920, later becoming the General Manager until his death in 1932.
Cockatoo Island is not just a place to stay, but also a significant part of Australia's history. It is one of 11 historic sites that make up the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage Property. Managed by the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust, Cockatoo Island and the other sites have national and international significance. Located in First Nations Countries at the entrance to Sydney Harbour, they offer natural beauty and showcase heritage structures from different eras.
We hope you find this information useful as you plan your visit or stay at Cockatoo Island. For more details and useful links, please explore our website.
