About the Business
Welcome to Teru Japanese Eatery, located in the heart of Altona North at Borrack Square. As an establishment that focuses on food and is a point of interest for locals and visitors alike, we pride ourselves on being a top-notch restaurant offering the best of Japanese cuisine.
Our Chef and Owner, Toon, was born and raised in Thailand, known as the food superpower of the world. His culinary journey began as a teenager when he moved to Bangkok to study and stayed with his cousin. It was there that he discovered his passion for cooking while helping his aunt prepare dinner for the whole family. These early experiences laid the foundation for his love of culinary arts.
After graduating, Toon sought new challenges and moved to Los Angeles in 2001. He started his career as a kitchen helper in a busy Thai restaurant and later had the opportunity to work at Yamato Restaurant, one of the biggest Japanese Restaurant Chains in the US. It was during this time that Toon fell in love with Japanese cuisine and honed his skills from the back of the kitchen to the front of the sushi bar.
In 2008, Toon made Melbourne his home and began working at Kanpai Japanese Restaurant in South Yarra. His talent and hard work led him to be the head chef at Ichi Ni Izakaya before he decided to fulfill his dream of opening his own Japanese eatery in the western suburbs. Toon's wish is to make the local community enjoy his meals and experience the flavors of Japan without having to travel far.
At Teru, we refuse to compromise on quality. We source our fresh ingredients from top suppliers to ensure that every dish we serve is of the highest standard. Whether you dine with us in person or choose to enjoy our meals at home, we have worked tirelessly to package our meals in a way that maintains their quality and allows you to bring the Teru experience to your own dining table.
We take pride in our commitment to providing exceptional customer service. In 2012, Toon was recognized for his efforts and received the "Best Customer Service Award" from Federation Square. We strive to create a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere for all our guests, ensuring that your dining experience at Teru Japanese Eatery is always top-notch.
Come and join us for an authentic Japanese dining experience that will tantalize your taste buds and leave you craving for more. We look forward to serving you the best of Japanese cuisine and making your visit to Teru a memorable one.

"Decent Japanese food but very overpriced considering the location of the restaurant and quantity of the food. I ordered the Beef Yakisoba and Salmon Sushi. The sushi roll was very tiny with the tiniest piece of salmon ever and the Beef Yakisoba had only 2 tiny pieces of beef. I told her that the dish was tasting good but that she should consider adding a decent amount of salmon to the sushi. When my partner and me gave the owner this as constructive critisism, she told us angry to cook it ourselves and go home. She also forced us to pay in advance which is weird since we sat at a table inside the place. They don't have a door, the places is full of tiny fruit flies and the airconditioner full of mold. I am typing this while both of us are sick in bed with diarrhea and stomach pain. I do not recommend as there are way better places as you can read in my previous reviews."
"Finally a decent Japanese eatery in my area that lets the simplicity of their ingredients showcase how Japanese cuisine should be experienced. I ordered the agedashi tofu and the poke don. Absolutely delicious. Staff were so kind and the restaurant itself is small but quaint, a welcomed relief from the hustle and bustle of Borrack square car park lol. An affordable menu without the hefty price tag. Unfortunately no hot tea on the menu to pair with my meal but no big deal, it was still so satisfying. You should definitely give Teru a try if you’re looking for local authentic Japanese cuisine!"
"The gyoza were great - light and full of flavour. The japanese curry was decent and good portion size, would be great if the curry had a tad more flavour. We liked that the karage chicken were separated from the curry to prevent it getting soggy. The poke bowl was pretty tasty but the portion size was pretty small."
"We accidentally bump into this place after seeing such a high review. Nevertheless it didn't disappoint. The Teru Roll is a must try. It has the nice smoked taste to it. We also took the dragon roll, pan grilled chicken and beef teriyaki, which is just as nice. Serving was fast and environment is clean."
"Five stars are well deserved for this fantastic Japanese food! Amazing quality, super fresh ingredients, sensational presentation well worth the trip to enjoy such food in Altona, the standards are what you expect to fine in the city!"
