Mount Booralee
About the Business
Welcome to Mount Booralee Estate, nestled on twenty acres of private, natural bushland in the picturesque town of Blackheath, located in the heart of the Blue Mountains, Australia. As one of the mountain's most historic properties, our beautiful 1930's federation style home offers a unique lodging experience surrounded by stunning gardens and parkland areas.
Immerse yourself in the tranquil ambiance of our estate, where you can explore our extensive grounds featuring a pond, water garden, and the Summit β a high rocky outcrop offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding district, including Mount Hay, Mount Wilson, and the Gross Valley. Whether you're seeking a peaceful getaway or an adventure in nature, Mount Booralee provides the perfect setting.
Our establishment is not just a place to stay; it's a point of interest in itself. Discover the rich history of Mount Booralee through fascinating anecdotes. Legend has it that Miss Boutcher, the previous owner, once complained about a gentleman sunbathing nude on the hills a mile away. She claimed to have seen him with her powerful glasses, sparking intrigue and amusement. Miss Boutcher also insisted on having only one bedroom in the house to ensure uninterrupted sleep, a unique feature that adds to the property's charm.
In 1945, the estate changed hands to Mr. Edward Hill, a leather merchant, and his wife Myie. They renamed the property 'Mount Booralee' after the family's long-standing tradition of living in houses with the same name. The Hills dedicated their efforts to enhancing the gardens, creating an enchanting 'English/Australian' landscape. With massed planting of rhododendrons and azaleas, an orchard, an Oriental garden, and a pond, the gardens became a true oasis.
Over the years, Mount Booralee passed through several owners, each leaving their mark on the property. The current owners acquired the estate in 2014 and have continued to honor Edward Hill's philosophy by expanding and enhancing the gardens. They have carefully replanted both native and exotic plant species, restoring areas damaged by the devastating bushfires in December 2019.
Despite the original house being destroyed by fire, the current house, an attractive example of an inter-war bungalow, maintains the spirit and ethos of the mountain home that has endured since 1881. The estate has become a popular destination for tourists visiting Blackheath, offering a serene backdrop for weddings, social events, and a peaceful retreat from the bustling city life.
At Mount Booralee, we pride ourselves on providing a unique lodging experience surrounded by natural beauty and a rich historical legacy. Whether you're seeking relaxation, nature exploration, or a memorable event venue, our estate offers the perfect blend of tranquility and charm. Come and experience the magic of Mount Booralee for yourself.
