"One of the most spectacular nature walks you can do in Ireland. The cliffs are impressive, and the sense of peace in this desolated landscape is very welcoming if you want to escape from your busy routine."
"I did the Erris Head Loop Walk twice with Alchemy Tours, once in the sunshine and once in the rain. Both times were amazing. The views are rugged and stunning. We even saw a sheep dog herd sheep. I learned about the bog snd much more, and if you stepped on the boggy ground , you felt it (wet)."
"Bring your boots camera too and on a sunny day if you're adventurous your swimsuit. A lovely tranquil spot and a lovely well laid out loop walk."
"Erris Head Loop Walk was highly recommended to me by a colleague for it’s incredible scenic coastal views. Unfortunately on the day I went out to Belmullet for the hike, the day started off with soft drizzle which seemed bearable at the time, but when I arrived at the car park for the Erris Head walk, the rain was torrential with strong wind, and even after waiting it out the rain didn’t abate. I missed out this time, but braved the lashing rain for a photo at least of the start of the walk. This is walk is very much high up on my list next time I go back to Mayo, hopefully with a few more days to plan with in case the weather is not on my side. Erris Head Loop offers a 5km loop walking along the scenic cliffs, with dramatic views of the countryside and surrounding islands. There are a few points of interest along the route. The walk starts off at the Erris Head car park, with the path starting off crossing a stile using steps over the fence into a field. Following the foot path along the loop, you can expect to find a wooden footbridge over a small stream followed by a railed viewpoint close to the cliff edge, giving beautiful views of Llandavuck Island, Pidgeon Rock and sea arches. Further up the walk you can expect to find a coast watch station that functioned as a look out station during WW2. You’ll also find the stone letters forming the word “EIRE” (Gaelic for Ireland) which indicated Ireland’s neutral territory to the warring nations encountering the land. There is also a trig beacon along the way which was used by Ordnance Survey Ireland to create maps, using the measurement of angles and distance between various other trig beacons around the country. When you plan to go, ensure you have good hiking boots, rain gear, a bottle of water and some snacks."
