About Treaty Stone
Welcome to Treaty Stone, a historic institution located in County Limerick, Limerick. As an establishment and point of interest, Treaty Stone is a must-visit tourist attraction for history enthusiasts and those interested in the rich heritage of Limerick.
The Treaty Stone holds immense significance as it is the very rock on which the Treaty of Limerick was signed in 1691. This pivotal moment marked the surrender of the city to William of Orange, also known as William III of England. Limerick earned the nickname "Treaty City" due to the significance of this treaty.
The Treaty of Limerick played a crucial role in the accession of William of Orange and his wife Mary Stuart to the English throne. This treaty, signed in the presence of both armies, took place on the 3rd of October 1691 at the Clare end of Thomond Bridge.
Originally, the Treaty Stone was situated on the ground opposite its current location, where the old Ennis mail coach departed for Ennis through Cratloe woods. However, since 1865, the stone has been placed on a plinth at the Clare end of Thomond Bridge, thanks to the efforts of John Richard Tinsley, the mayor of the city at that time.
At Treaty Stone, we aim to preserve and share the captivating story of Limerick's role in history. If you have any events, amenities, good news stories, or even a community group or business related to Limerick city or County Limerick, we encourage you to submit the details to Limerick.ie, as we are dedicated to showcasing the best of our vibrant community.
