About Curraghchase Forest Park
Welcome to Curraghchase Forest Park, a stunning establishment located at Unnamed Road, Kyleavarraga North, Co. Limerick, Ireland. As an expansive park and point of interest, Curragh Chase offers over 300 hectares of rolling parkland, trails, mixed woodland, lakes, and an arboretum for visitors to explore and enjoy.
Once the former home of the de Vere family, Curragh Chase boasts a rich history and beautiful architecture. The grand house, with its impressive façade, proudly overlooks the main car park and man-made lake. Throughout the park, you'll discover various features of the de Vere estate, including an impressive arboretum, a pet cemetery, and a memorial cross.
For nature enthusiasts, Curragh Chase is a haven of biodiversity. The park is home to several Special Areas of Conservation (SAC’s), primarily due to the presence of the Lesser Horseshoe Bat and the rare hawfinch bird. Coillte, the organization responsible for the park, is actively involved in restoring native woodlands, including a native Yew woodland, to preserve and enhance the natural habitat. Ducks and an array of waterfowl can be found living and waddling around the picturesque lake.
Curragh Chase offers something for everyone, ensuring an enjoyable day out for visitors of all ages. Please note that a new cashless payment system has been implemented at the car park, allowing payment through credit and debit cards or any AP-based payment system. Annual passes are still valid and can be used as usual, while new passes can be purchased on the Coillte website.
The park is conveniently located 22km west of Limerick city on the N69 coast road, near the villages of Kilcornan and Askeaton. There are six walking trails within Curragh Chase, catering to all fitness levels. The Lake Trail provides a gentle stroll around the lake, offering magnificent views of the house. The Curragh Trail and Glenisca Trail take you deeper into the forest, passing notable landmarks such as an old cave, limestone outcrops, and the Yew woodland. Additionally, two extensive playgrounds, an arboretum with a pet cemetery, picnic areas with tables and BBQ stands, and a permanent orienteering course provide ample opportunities for recreation and exploration.
If you're a nature lover, you'll be captivated by the diverse habitats and abundant flora and fauna found throughout Curragh Chase. The Yew woodland, the lake and its feathered residents, the bats residing in the grand house, and the numerous specimen trees in the arboretum are just a few of the park's natural treasures waiting to be discovered.
Plan your visit to Curraghchase Forest Park and immerse yourself in the beauty and tranquility of this remarkable Irish gem.
