About Black Head Lighthouse
Welcome to Black Head Lighthouse, a captivating establishment located at Murrooghtoohy North, Co. Clare, Ireland. As an iconic point of interest and tourist attraction, Black Head Lighthouse offers visitors a unique and mesmerizing experience.
Steeped in history, this lighthouse has undergone several changes throughout the years. In 1980, the character of the light was modified from a 0.4 second flash every 2.0 seconds to a 1.0 second flash every 5.0 seconds. This adjustment was made in agreement between the Inspector and Engineer, and approved by the Board on June 13th. The Notice to Mariners was subsequently issued on September 18th, announcing that the character would be changed on October 22nd. AGA Navigation Aids played a vital role in this transformation by providing the necessary propane flasher, burner, and three mantles, along with other essential equipment.
Black Head Lighthouse holds a fascinating distinction among its counterparts along the coast. It was the last station to utilize carbide-to-water acetylene generators, a method once commonly employed by lighthouses. This historical detail adds an intriguing aspect to the lighthouse's narrative, making it an even more compelling destination for history enthusiasts.
In a significant development on February 18th, 2002, the gas light was replaced with a modern solar-powered light. This transition not only embraced sustainable technology but also ensured the continued operation of the lighthouse, guiding ships and sailors safely along the Irish coast.
As you explore Black Head Lighthouse, you will be captivated by its stunning coastal location and breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. The lighthouse stands tall, exuding an air of resilience and steadfastness, a testament to its enduring purpose of safeguarding seafarers.
Whether you are a history buff, a nature lover, or simply seeking a unique and picturesque destination, Black Head Lighthouse is a must-visit. Immerse yourself in the rich maritime heritage, marvel at the engineering marvels of the past, and create lasting memories against the backdrop of one of Ireland's most remarkable landmarks.
