Reviews of Long Strand Beach
"Another favourite of ours for a walk. Note there is no swimming on this beach as there is a rip current. We have seen seals swimming off shore on a rare occasion. Gorgeous waves, very clean beach and a great restaurant to end your trip!"
"Beautiful stretch of West Cork beach. Not safe for swimming but an awesome vista any time of the year"
"Long strand is long,.and because it's long, it takes a bit of time to walk the length of it. I love the place. Not safe to swim there , but I always do if conditions are right. Surfers use both ends and in my opinion the Galley head end is a bit safer. But is also very dangerous because of the shifting sands and sudden changes in dept and strong currents. Feck it,,, don't swim there. Because of the outflow from the lake the sand at the Galley Head ends is always changing. The place is WILD and FANTASTIC. I have seen seals and dolphins there and once while snorkeling swam with dolphins at long strand. The place also attracts nudist who tend to use the middle of the beach. There is many the good swim I had at long strand in the nude. There are great sand dunes and an area of conservation. Be warned,,, if swimming in the nude , there is a small population of human Meercat who inhabit the sand dunes and will be popping there heads up to watch you in the nude. There is a pizza place and a car park at the Castlefreak end. I avoid that end me being a loaner by nature. Long strand is long, great for a walk. The sand underfoot is not that firm so if you have difficulty walking the are places that can be tough going."
"For walking it's great. But no swimming is allowed because of strong currents. The sand is a bit harsh. Lot to visit around. Not the best beach around."
"It doesn't get much better. Beautiful beach with awesome views of the rugged coastline near Galley Head. On a clear day you can see Fastnet lighthouse which is about 15 kms off the coast. Fantastic amenity with protected sand dunes and forest walks nearby. Close to the village of Rathbarry and Castlefreke Castle. Restaurant at Owenahincha end of beach. Plenty of parking available."
