Reviews of Westfield Court, University of Hull
"My son studies here. The halls are reasonably equipped but very expensive in comparison to other universities halls of residence. The area nearby is a little questionable too but he is having a great time and the clubs on offer are varied. Easy to find though parking restrictions are in play."
"A well designed architectural masterpiece to give students maximum comfort. Aside the study room, there is paino room, room for snooker, table soccer, table tennis etc."
"Very big building, unfortunately there is no visitors parking but there was always someone to help."
"Overall a great place for first year students to get used to the campus and living away from home however there can be issues with heating and the water facilities but it's a quick fix"
"The place itself is nice but actually living here is awful, never mind having to study here. I moved in in September 2021 and immediately did my inventory - we found we had a broken kitchen chair, a broken window handle, stains on the stools, a very unsanitary kettle and a huge chunk of the kitchen side was even missing amongst other things! The following day there was a sign on the window saying ‘waiting for handle parts’ and the broken kitchen chair had gone. One of our flatmates ended up buying a new kettle as we were brought another in vile condition also. This was the same months later - after 2 months, multiple of my flatmates went to reception to complain that we do not have adequate ventilation in the kitchen when cooking and that there were not enough chairs for everyone since this hadn’t been resolved - we were told that maintenance and repairs had nothing to do with them and later informed that they were not ordering parts for our window handle until more were needed - literally waiting for them to break in other flats. After Christmas, I had made multiple complaints on my phone about this and in the next couple days the window handle was fixed, however the same broken chair was returned. We fully broke it in half and called maintenance again to come replace it. This time they did. I also had (still have) a broken radiator. It is always cold at the bottom and clanking and making a vibrating noise very loudly at all kinds of hours (which keeps me up at night) the valve constantly being left at 0 now - maintenance (2 men) discussed infront of me how they would resolve this - they said they would ‘save themselves a long job’ if they did X - I regularly call them about the issue as it is still clanking and keeping me awake at night but they do nothing. They care about cheap and quick solutions, not what’s best in the long-run or for those of us who live here. I’ve also had flickering lights in my room many times but never resolved. Many of us have had no or fluctuating hot water and heating which wasn’t resolved for almost 6 months (people were told to put on jumpers, buy heated blankets and shower in the gym). I even have a friend who had sewage in her KITCHEN at one point - it took weeks of complaining before she was relocated to another flat as the issue persisted. There were also a few separate occasions when maintenance from UPP subcontractor allow themselves into my room without my permission, knowledge or consent (and they have no good reason to be there), including situation when I was asleep in bed and literally in the shower - this led to screaming and swearing at the man to get the hell out. The walls are paper thin (you can hear buzz of the mobile on the desk behind the wall, not to mention you will get full, unwanted insight to neighbours' sexual endeavours), endless safety door and corridors means that you keep experiencing door slamming for hours and hours during the day and night; students are allowed to have in each room own tv and sound system and can use it quite freely between 6am up until 11pm (and often using it outside of that hours, obviously). Evening and night disturbances are rather common. Students are drinking/smoking outside (including weed without any bother from the staff apparently - speaking of, one flat on my floor must smoke weed indoors because you can smell it very strongly coming from it - nobody seems to care. But it reeks) blasting 'music' through open windows, having shouting competitions and fights outdoor. 24/7 security (who I’ve never actually seen about) is not bothered much up until you give them a call and ask for an intervention, even then there’s no guarantee they’ll do anything. Communication with the Hub is challenging and takes substantial period of time to receive return emails. Offered incentives you should get when extending the contract for another academic year but only if you go for 51 weeks rather than 43 weeks. After weeks of no reply, I sent a follow up email saying I’m no longer interested.. they replied in half an hour with a contract."
