Reviews of Silchester Roman City Walls & Amphitheatre
"Fantastic place to visit! Steeped in history and well preserved, informative and great for walkers and dog walkers and taking your younger family to teach them about the Roman's it was a great experience. The Amphitheater was incredible you could feel the history there knowing it was for entertainment but very brutal for hundreds of years!"
"I expected something more from an English Heritage site. 30-40’ walk with just a few remains to be seen."
"Very pleasant walk - ampitheatre site impressive and identification of north and south gate and plenty of wall makes this a trip for the imagination - good areas of shade over the 2km if happens to be a really sunny day."
"my expectations were different- i expected ruins of the town. there are really just defence walls, and ruins of gates, nothing else. the ruins were converted into pasture for sheep. such a shame. i took one video from the ancient ditch. the ditch is not marked."
"I enjoyed (albeit typical British spring weather) a walk around the Silchester Roman walls. Quite a short, but very interesting walk nonetheless. Depending on your pace, it takes approximately 30-35 minutes to complete, which gives you a good idea on the size of the Roman town. The walls (or part of them are really what remains of this once ancient piece of history). You can also see the beautiful 12th century church, which sits to the south side of the Roman town. So, I would recommend this walk to anyone. Please ensure to keep your kids on a close eye around some of the wall embankments."
