"I have just attended the Autism Oxford Anxiety conference as an autistic speaker/advocate and guest. It was such an honour to be invited to talk at the event and I am so grateful to the Oxford team for making me so welcome. I have attended many conferences and speaking events, but this was by far the best and most autism friendly event. The Oxford team greeted me at the door, very warm and friendly and I felt I was welcomed and looked after all the way. Normally my anxiety is very high at these events, but the understanding the team have in autism and making reasonable adjustments is exceptional. I was even sent photos of the interior prior to my talk, so I could visualize things and feel less anxious. They also realized my dream of meeting Tony Attwood by asking him to chat with me afterwards. I would never have been able to appoach him, and they liased on my behalf. Such a kind and thoughtful thing to do, to help me realize my dream of meeting Tony in person. Also they looked after me the whole day, made sure I had tea, food and knew where to sit. All the little things that cripple autistics and exacerbate anxiety, they understood as many of their team are neurodivergent. The Oxford team are leading the way, they are showing other organizations how to get the best out of autistic people. They are inclusive, kind and at the forefront in understanding autistic culture and our need to be accepted and embraced for our differences. Also the quality of the talks by Tony Atwood and Michelle Garnett were exceptional and I learned a lot from them and the other speakers. I will always be grateful for the help and support of the Oxford team, I truly hope to return and attend to other events they have in the future. As an autistic person I gained greater confidence by this experience and this has already empowered me to reach out to others. Thank you Autism Oxford, for helping autistic voices feel heard and welcomed. Also noted how happy and inspired the other guests were at the event, there was a great atmosphere and empowered by your team."
