Reviews of Magdalen College School
"Amazing school, wonderful teachers, staff and amazing facilities! They just fixed all the windows and added new toilets ,doors and computers! The house point system might not be very encouraging but they deal very well with bullying!Just wonderfull!"
"I have been through this school's system, and though the education is good and most of the teachers are great, the school has issues that it fails to treat and uses the money gained from fundraising and funds ineffectively. The toilets, for one, are outdated and normally broken, the Wayneflete Hall changing rooms have no heating despite being used in Winter. The system of communication between staff and students is only face to face or through parents, and the heads of year definitely treat students unequally for no seen reason. There's been an incident in which I emailed a teacher and it showed up in their spam folder after I had had to prompt them to search for it, and in which I emailed my head of year with a complaint about a group I'd been put in only for them to severely misinterpret it and dismiss my concerns. The Extended Learning Days need improvement, as currently they seem randomly sorted or sorted in a way that is not beneficial to the students. During year 11, the Extended Learning Days are focused on University instead of College/Apprenticeships despite those being forced on us. The citizenship levels provide students with little education on society needs, we never have had a lesson on sexuality but even more simply we've never had a lesson on how to write to employers. The school turns a blind eye to anyone who is not failing nor getting straight As and seems to actively remind them that they are not a concern or exemplary. We've been told off for speaking badly of the school, when it is really what we've been experiencing. I've had teachers who were incapable of controlling a class not seek assistance and instead have a useless lesson, I've had my own personal experience of bullying ignored and when my parent complained for the school to reply that I was offered support. The headteacher does not listen to the concerns of the students, the system is highly dysfunctional overall."
"Although the lessons are okay and some of the teachers are good, the head teacher doesnt communicate well with students and the school doesn't handle bullying effectively."
"Rather disappointing school... My child does not mis behave much at all, infact I'd go as far as to call him a "good child", not saying that is at all a good nor bad thing. However this school looks extremely good from the outside and when your child is actually in the school, its quite a different experience. For firsts the communication is dreadful! In response to Josh I agree on some levels - firstly as my child did not have many encounters with the schools punishment and reward systems I don't have much experience to speak from, but the little experience is that: The school do not try to reason or even benefit the child. They see everything as black and white, wrong or right, and have no interest in treating the child like someone with emotions and such - which makes things difficult at *certain ages*... This is a shame because the school itself is quite a nice facility. As for the schools reward system, it pretty much doesn't exist. They have everything laid out and planned for punishment, but for rewards it goes no further than an un-balanced house point system that they barely attempt to encourage. My child convinced me to let him move and I can say, that it was very beneficial for my child! :)"
"Magdalen has amazing facilities - however the teachers are not quite "to par". They are bias to say the least... Its unfortunate, as this school truly has potential... The issue lies within the "corner cutting" - they do it too often. They don't fully look into situations and often just assume the child is in the wrong and therefor punish the student. It's even happened where they have punished the student, and after finding the student innocent they continue to carry on the punishment... Some of the staff are very good and their education level is high, but their punishment and reward system is very sideways and almost completely designed without care..."
