Reviews of SOAS University of London
"I used to attend sylheti classes held by a Marie Thaut who is member of staff at SOAS and uses SOAS’s emails and funding to run these classes. During the lesson she spouted Antisemitic and Islamaphobic comments which I complained to her about that it is wrong to be a teacher and say these things but she said “she does these lessons in her free time so it doesnt matter”. I complained to the uni as she has children and people of many faiths in these lessons so they could be subjected to these comments. However, I did not get any response from the university nor from the language department"
"Thee entrance to the main building has been redesigned and is absolutely stunning. Lots of photo opportunities for students, graduands, alumni, etc. New reception area as well with screens and more. Not just the front entrance has had a face lift but the foyers on every floor have been refreshed. There's new style sitting on each floor with tables that can be used as a study or chill out space. There's also a new canteen in the Paul Wembley Wing that's open for 2 hours everyday and serves really good food."
"I had a shocking and traumatic experience simply trying to enter SOAS as a guest student. I was harassed by a member of staff who yelled at me repeatedly and refused to let me in the building whilst reception completely ignored the situation… not coming back."
"1- star review for the lack of student support. Email any admin point of contact, and you will never hear back. I have reached out numerous times to mitigating circumstances, appeals, online student support, with no success. But it does not stop there. Markings are inconsistent among instructors. There is no standard grading process, as it is complete bias based on the instructors own opinion. Instructors change questions the week the assignment is due. Weight of markings change without notifying students. They leave harsh feedback, enforce their own political opinion. Write an academic paper against their views and be prepared to fail. SOAS continues to disrespect students with their behavior. They lack basic ethics and professionalism a university should have. Stop banking off of international students, respect your students and their perspectives. Practice professionalism by responding to students timely. Notify changes to students in a reasonable timeframe. But most of all, support your students. I regret going to school here. It has been the worst decision I made in my life."
"I’m really disappointed by what the new management has done to the building over the summer. It used to be a comfortable and friendly space, now it’s been modernised and securitised to the point of feeling very unwelcoming. I probably won’t be coming to campus to study when there’s so many alternative cosy spaces around Bloomsbury that don’t seem as hostile to students."
