Reviews of Chicheley Hall
"Very disappointed ☹️. The food was very overpriced, for what it was. The wine expensive, came with a screw top, not a cork. The tables were missing table linen and the crockery more akin to a dinner plate used at home, not for fine dining in a venue that presents itself as upmarket. I would expect silver service. We had the strangest of steaks ever served with a slice of chicken liver pate perched on top, no garnish. Most odd. The bedroom was plainly decorated, only one window would open, so we had a very warm overnight stay. Breakfast similarly disappointing as everything was fried and not quite the standard we had hoped. The food menu generally needs updating; either the classics are expertly cooked and presented, or other more contemporary alternatives. Nice building but in need of refurbishment and a style foodie makeover. Overpriced."
"Attended a wedding of some very good friends. I was pretty disappointed at how bland Room 19 was, very dingy and not a painting in sight! The room was absolutely roasting but we were unable to open the window and the bathroom was stifling. The heated towel rail or radiator (?) is so close to the toilet you're in real danger of burning your head or your butt! Also the bar sells nothing on tap, it's all small bottles which makes drinks extremely expensive. That said the wedding itself was absolutely stunning and the staff were so friendly and accommodating. The phases of the wedding blended seamlessly with the efficiency of the staff. Well recommended as a wedding venue."
"Beautiful country house hotel. Lots of old world charm. Currently looks like refurbishment of the bar area, so I hope they don’t make it too modern as there was lots tiles going down on the floor that, in my opinion, didn’t really match with the beautiful flag stone floor adjacent. Nice coffee and biscuits too! Lovely gardens with Peacocks wandering around. Short walk to the church too."
"Chicheley Hall does not deserve a 4 star rating. I attended a wedding for a weekend and although the setting and countryside was beautiful, this venue is sadly run down and in need of maintenance, the staff need a refresher course in communication skills and the food needs a complete overhaul. The room was terrible: a twin room with NO VIEWS at all. Stand on the bed, raise your arm up and that is where the window sill started. There was no bedside cabinet, no complimentary tea/coffee (available in other rooms), no bath (available in next door's twin room) and no lighting AT ALL. A small bedside light was finally provided but with no bedside table, we had to navigate between the end of the bed in the dark. Oh, I forget, we had some lighting around the door frame which shone through a poorly fitted door. Despite complaints, the hotel was full and although an alternative was offered - not in the main section, we would have to vacate it on the second evening away from the wedding group and back into the above mentioned room. Not ideal at all. The food. Oh dear. At the wedding everyone tucked in to delicious looking dishes. As a vegetarian I was offered a sad goats cheese mousse on a mediocre piece of bread. As those around me tucked in to roast with all the veggie trimmings, I was offered a plate of peas, with a rubbery slice of undercooked aubergine with tomatoes and melted cheese. It was disgusting. Dessert was cheesecake. When asked if the thin jelly topping was vegetarian I received 'uncertain' stares so I passed. Starving, the hog roast served later had few to no vegetarian options. The next day was no better: the breakfast was a dismal buffet. Instant coffee on offer? We had to wait more than 10 mins for bread which was absent, only for a cheap plastic wrapped eternal shelf life loaf to be 'plonked' on the side and not even in a basket. No fresh rolls, a poor selection for those wishing a continental selection and in general drab. The staff (apart from the delightful wedding planner), were young, quite often absent and not exactly friendly. They hung around skulking in corners or in odd rooms and generally lacked any enthusiasm or general knowledge. For example, in the bar it took an eternity to receive 2 drinks. I understand training was underway, however, how long does it take to pour a G&T and a glass of wine? Or at breakfast, would it have been too much trouble for someone to be on hand to request bread or filter coffee? In short, when paying a 4* hotel for room and board, I have a certain expectation, including a fitted light bulb in the bedroom by at least the second night. Sadly the price did not waiver given the number of issues, nor were we even offered complimentary drinks. Rudimentary basics were not met, thus my low opinion on what should have been a spectacular visit."
"This place looks beautiful and if assigned a room in the actual house, it probably is. However an ordinary room is in one of the many decaying outbuildings built in the hall's heyday for the servants. Rooms are pretty basic with no mod cons. Entry is up steep staircases covered in ancient carpet with walls in need of a repaint (there was literally blood on the wall opposite my room.) Maybe party in the house, but don't stay the night."
