Reviews of Bedford Hospital South Wing
"Massive let down with the exception of the fantastic doctors and nurses back of house. My experience with the A&E receptionists have been appalling - attended with an urgent referral (possible life threatening condition) and would not let more than 1 family member inside the waiting room with me despite others clearly having more than 1 person sat with them to support which is discriminatory and biased. The staff went about this situation very unprofessionally and raised their voice across the room stating that I was not allowed more than one family member supporting me. This member of staff in particular came over and lacked complete empathy or compassion for my situation and escalated the situation rather than taking my family to one side to settle the matter. Understandably my family retaliated due to the fact that this matter was not dealt with confidentially. I even tried to reason with her and explained that I work for the NHS and that I did understand where she was coming from, she said: “then you should know better”. This member of staff was clearly looking for confrontation rather than making a simple compromise. We ended up going to the urgent treatment centre where we spoke to a very kind and understanding doctor who arranged a compromise and for the scenario not to be repeated again. I am sorry- I was not in the right mind frame to remember your name. This is where I returned back to the waiting area, although reluctantly. In a lot of distress, I left the building due to this matter and also as I had been waiting for 6 hours and only had seen a Triage nurse for an URGENT and possibly life threatening referral. I was convinced by this point that whoever I spoke to at reception lacked a complete understanding of my situation and had never heard of empathy. Before this incident I approached reception in tears stating that I was scared and emphasised my wanting for some medical attention. The outcome was 2 x ibuprofen tablets. Whenever I requested an update on scans, blood tests or results, I was told “we’re not that department” and wouldn’t even pick up a phone to attempt to find information for myself. They sent me to a “staff only” area without supervision to find a member of medical staff on my own in order to chase up my own health treatment despite being very unwell which I find unacceptable. I was meant to be formally admitted to the ward but instead was admitted informally to the A&E waiting room where I waited from 17:00 until now (the following day, 11:30 and ongoing) as they had no beds available. I was made to sit upright in a brightly lit, freezing cold room all night and as you can predict, I got less than 1 hours sleep which led to me feeling even worse. I was also not offered any food on the evening of being admitted and also the morning - I had to go into the previously mentioned “staff only” area to chase up some toast and a cup of tea. Considering I had been pumped full of sickness relief medicine, I felt as though it was very important for this to have been actioned so I would not be having it on an empty stomach, unfortunately it was not. Contrastingly, I received beyond excellent support from the nurses and doctors within the medical team (in the A&E building). So kind, caring, gentle and patient. Made me gobsmacked to believe they work in the same building. I wasn’t in my right mind to remember the name of a particular guy that supported me on a couple of occasions - once to take my bloods and another to guide me to my CT scan. He is such a genuine asset to the team and is totally unbothered by everything - and will only reassure you. Also, a lady doctor who I spoke to who assessed me on 8/3/23 who was also fantastic. I apologise for not remembering names but you both truly deserve recognition."
"Nurses and doctors are great, shame can't be said about reception. I was made to wait outside with two kids in the rain because we wasn't allowed to sit with my partner in a&e. I tried to explain he had special needs but she didnt care. So we waited with the drunks, very safe!"
"Bedford Hospital have amazing staff, doctors and nurses. My 86 year old husband been admitted for life threatening circumstances at least 4 times in five years. Fortunately the last time was November 21 when he had a second perforated bowel. They always work tirelessly and find a solution without surgery, Thank you. A happy new year, you deserve your pay rise, clapping does not pay the bills."
"Called 111 was told to wait 9 hrs for ambulance or go to A&E, taken to A&E 11pm at night waited 13hrs to see a doctor did not get seen following day till 3pm, they should offer you a death pill wait 13hrs in pain or take a pill and die, I no longer bother with the NHS it's absolute shambles!!! Can not even get an appointment at my local GP 2 weeks to get appointment and it's a telephone call. YOUR BETTER OFF DEAD!!!"
"I was sitting outside the hospital and was very disgusted with what I saw. I was visiting a ward where the staff were rude and didn’t know how to speak to patients family. On my way to see someone in a ward, I walked past a side room where another patient was falling off the bed and did not have any undergarments on. I could literally see his private parts. He was left there for over 15 minutes, I saw him in the same position on my way out. Anyone that was walking through the main path to exit would’ve seen this. Is this really acceptable treatment for a patient??"
