Wales Ape & Monkey Sanctuary
About the Business
Welcome to the Wales Ape & Monkey Sanctuary, a unique establishment and popular point of interest located in the picturesque village of Caehopkin, Abercrave in the United Kingdom. Our sanctuary is a place like no other, where the welfare and protection of primates are at the forefront of everything we do.
Founded in 1990, the Wales Ape & Monkey Sanctuary has been providing a safe and natural environment for a variety of rescued primates from all over the world for over three decades. Our team of dedicated professionals and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that our residents are happy, healthy and thriving in their surroundings.
As a tourist attraction, our sanctuary offers visitors the chance to experience these fascinating creatures up close and personal. With over 60 primates currently residing here, guests can observe and learn about a variety of species, such as Gibbons, Baboons, Capuchins, and Spider Monkeys. Our sanctuary is also home to the only group of Ring-tailed Lemurs in Wales.
Visitors can take a leisurely stroll around our nature trail, which winds through beautiful woodlands and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Our large outdoor enclosures mean that the primates can roam freely and interact with each other, creating a natural and enriching environment.
In addition to being a tourist attraction, our sanctuary also plays an important role in primate conservation. We work closely with other organizations to raise awareness of the threats facing primates in the wild and to support conservation initiatives around the world.
We welcome visitors of all ages and are dedicated to providing an educational and enjoyable experience for everyone. Our gift shop and café offer a range of refreshments and souvenirs, and our knowledgeable team is always on hand to answer any questions you may have.
At the Wales Ape & Monkey Sanctuary, we are passionate about primate welfare and conservation. By visiting us, you are helping to support our important work and contributing to a brighter future for these incredible creatures.

"Lovely place for a quick visit and not too expensive. Some animals inside with rain and cold but still nice to go around. No food or snacks on site but coffee machine and a place to stop. Good selection of animals but we didn't see as many as website portrays. We will be going back. Family of 4 (one is under 3) cost £22 total"
"We had a really nice time here. Some of the reviews on here are off putting but we decided to decide for ourselves and so glad we did :) We had a lovely welcome from the lady at the ticket office - good amount of parking. Its bigger than it looks on arrival and we felt the animals had a decent amount of space to play. There are plenty of picnic tables around for a pit stop or picnic. A small selection of drinks are available to buy. There are signs on some of the animals on their amazing / sad journeys. Please do remember, this is a sanctuary and these amazing animals have been rescued - its not a zoo, so don't expect frills or theme rides... just enjoy their beauty and the fact they are safe and your ticket money is helping this charity. Keep up the good work all! Well worth the visit! ❤️ * flat and doable with pushchair *please don't take your dogs as it causes distress to some of the animals (as we witnessed for ourselves)"
"Deceptively bigger than it first appears, with plenty on offer if you take the time to really look into every space. My son really enjoyed it, and the animals didn't seem maltreated or under stimulated. They all had plenty of food and seemed very active."
"Was nice to see the animals but would of been great if they done some sort of walk around tour explaining about the animals background, some general facts, how they were rescued etc. Was no shop on site to offer food or refreshments so call into a shop before you visit as its in a very rural area."
