Reviews of Uckfield College
"Due to undiagnosed autism, I was branded as a ‘difficult child’. I was in an hours detention after school several times a week for something as simple as rolling my sleeves or not doing up a top button, things I am unable to do due to sensory issues. They care more about grades that mental health and happiness, no matter how serious mental health gets. I had a horrible experience that left me feeling useless for not being able to achieve grades they set out for me in year 7."
"Really quite a poor Sixth Form, you are not treated like the young adult you are, for example you are given 'Study Periods' where it is compulsory to sit down and "study", thus there is very little freedom, which there should be in College. This is done instead of free periods, which is something most Colleges do instead, such as the one I am now attending instead: Lewes College. After attending Lewes for just two months, I have realised how bad Uckfield really is. Staff morale, from what I can tell, is much higher, as all three of my teachers seem so passionate, unlike nearly any teachers from Uckfield. Ridiculous rules such as no hair dye and the such are observed at pain of DETENTION (that's right, DETENTION at a COLLEGE) Uckfield which is outrageous to be enforcing on 16, 17 and 18 year old's. I have just gone to a huge Student Council meeting at Lewes where one student from each class asks students in their classes non-academic grievances, and then put them forward at the meeting. The Principle himself attended, and addressed each an every issue. In contrast, students on this very Google Review page were called in after assembly and reprimanded. Unbelievable. Honestly, I just feel far, far more respected and treated like the young adult I am at Lewes, which prepared me far, far better for the environment I will be in at Uni, and have realised how terrible Uckfield really was. I would highly, highly advice against going to Uckfield 6th Form if you feel you deserve to be treated with respect; it just felt like an extension of GCSEs."
"Great school just finished year 11 and the teachers where very helpful. They helped me work to the best of my ability. The bullying system works well as not many of my friends where ever bullied and if they where then my head of year would sort it out .Most teachers are patient and work at pace of the class and also allow after school help for the students who struggle. The only reason I didn't go to sixth form was because they do not offer the subject I was looking for but overall great school (I do believe that it is stupid how students are not aloud to wear coats on school premises)"
"I am a pass student at this school, I now go to Lewes College. I did enjoy my time here at UCTC. Majority of the staff were friendly, and were helpful. I met loads of mates here which will be mates for life! This school also offers lots of activities and educational trips all over the world or even just down the road to Waitrose car park, etc etc. However, UCTC give up on their students who aren't so smart! They only seem to care about the students who will put up the schools results, as this will give them more funding which I totally disagree with. I experienced this myself. I was going to go to sixth form here, but I didn't get the grades. You had to get this average point score (which I didn't have much knowledge over as the system always seemed to change). Because I didn't try very hard in Business and Food Tech, as I focused on Maths, English, Media and Geography the subjects I wanted to pass, this bought down the average score! Dam it! The thing is, I passed Media and Geography (also English, not maths), but I couldn't do them at sixth form as I didn't get the average score. (I know the average score thing is down to the government, but the sixth form could have made alterations). The funny thing is though, I failed business and food tech, but they offered me those at sixth form! To me, that makes "so" much sense doesn't it. (They could only offer me Level 2 courses I think they were. 4 of them). But, these 4 offers are subjects I had no interest in. In my opinion I think they are only offering these 4 subjects, so they can get rid of people like me, just because I didn't get high grades! I was at that school since year 7. I even got a certificate congratulating me on not falling below 98% of my attendance since day one! So they were pleased at me for that, and that shows that I have dedication to work hard. On the day of my sixth form interview, I went over to the teacher (head of sixth form, Miss Fassam). She literally looked at my grades, and looked at me and said. "You haven't got the grades to do A-Levels." She then offered me those 4 subjects straight away, then when I said they don't suit me, she indicated that I should just look somewhere else or just pick one and see what it's like.I went home. I was very upset. And yes, I went home locked myself in the downstairs toilet, had a little cry, and was very stressed, I did though look at the positives. My parents were quite confused on how they could offer me things that I failed but not the things that I passed, and were confused over a couple of other things, so my parents emailed the school to see if they could go up, and talk to Miss Fassam again. So we went up to talk to Miss Fassam. I went with my dad. We got there, sat down and waited, or yeah and waited, and did I say we waited, oh yeah three times because we were waiting for like near on an hour, even when she was free and everybody had been seen to. Miss Fassam knew we were there, she knew we were coming back to see her and discuss what we discussed in the morning. But, she just simply ignored us. The other teachers up there said "she knows you're coming, she will be with you in a moment." That moment never arrived. Then another teacher (Miss Marshallsay) took us over and discussed sixth form. She was very helpful and made sense, and she was trying her best, and being very open and truthful. In the end, I wasn't going to go back to the sixth form college, and instead go to Lewes College where they very much accept everybody. So, what I'm trying to say is, if you're not clever, and don't achieve high grades, UCTC will give up on you. "Realising" Potential. What a lie. It's more like "Releasing Potential." UCTC have always been more helpful to those who are smarter, and give them extra support. However, UCTC was a good experience, some of the teachers did give me extra support. I did feel safe, and comfortable. Last thing, UCTC are slack with bullies. :) (Left UCTC in summer 2017 - Wrote this back then too, re-uploaded to edit a few things). I wouldn't know what the school is like now."
"Mostly a good school for learning, but sometimes it can feel like they're prioritising their whole school public image over the actual individual students well being and education. They are a public school, and no matter how much they change the uniform and build new building, they will still never be a private school. That's what they want to come across as from the outside, but when you're a student, you dont feel valued very much. One good thing they do for the students, though, is Enrichment Week which is a whole week off of school in the summer so that we can come in in our own clothes and thrive off of fun activities such as photography, preparing food and online gaming."
