Reviews of Dorothy Stringer School
"Thety should rename this school the bone zone! ps i did a poop in the toilet and didn't flush the chain!"
"Its very very Good i went to this school and study there its Good"
"This is a Brighton school that has had especially in the past some good qualities, but treating every member of staff, in particular supply teachers with a duty of care, is not in our experience one of them.My partner was asked to do a maternity there for an R.E. teacher and was told she is to be booked for two terms. Yet, without ever being given by the incompetent management of this school any formal observation/feedback or warning when financial circumstances changed the school management shockingly failed to notify her that she was not needed for the remaining term, when she asked them in person despite the five months she was covering there, part time in three different departments for the member of staff on maternity. Both the administrator for cover and especially the untrustworthy head of R.S. had not demonstrated the professional integrity to inform her of the decision in person and instead in a very cowardly fashion conveniently chose, to authorize her supply agency to only tell her after she had left the school grounds, in the last day of spring term and on the eve of an important personal event, they were well aware of!(as there is no compulsory protocol to follow but additionally lied and misled the rest of the staff about it, as my partner found out by bumping to an ex colleague later in the year). Needless to say we were flabbergasted for the lack of respect shown to my partner and effectively taking advantage of her position as a temporary worker. All she needed was to be told the truth, given some notice and not to be misled without any concern about her well being nor of the students, whom she had no chance of saying farewell, many of them had loved her teaching as evidenced by a number of complimentary cards she had received the period she was there. Word of caution for supply teachers, do insist if needing to be there on longer term basis to be employed only on a fixed term contract that gives you some sensible notice period and not just rely on this school's verbal assurance as it is as changeable as the English weather! In this occasion we experienced arrogance, poor management and lack of a high standard of ethics in delivering duty of care to all staff without discrimination due to agency status.Incidentally, the agency was very apologetic and made suitable amends. If it wasn't for supply staff to be available the whole educational system would not be able to carry on on a daily basis, and parents would have to fork out for extra child care for students being sent home, as the teacher's shortage is very real, so at least please do treat respectfully those people who come to help and without prejudice. This is a school that likes to sit on its laurels, and for sure not a school I would recommend as its duplicity with its staff is shocking and treacherous and thus not fit for the purpose of educating the morals and ethics of young people.Actions always speak louder than rhetoric!"
"An AMAZING SCHOOL! It gives you so many opportunities... 100000000 times better than Varndean , Stringer is fun , sporty, high reputation Ect... The clubs are amazing , the teachers are , the pupils are , the lessons are..... I JUST LOVE THIS SCHOOL !!!!!!"
"I went here for a relatively short time and found it incredibly poor - terrible problems with bullying and supervision - the main lunchtime eatery for pupils served pot noodles and hot dogs, and it was generally an intimidating place for new pupils - I do hope they have a better hand on things now - my experience was awful and the bullying meant my academic performance suffered - when I moved onto a new school I was downgraded re: academic stream because my work suffered at Dorothy Stringer due to the severe verbal bullying. Hated the place. One particularly odd memory relates to lunch break stand-offs with the police on successive lunchtimes, and being chased down the playing fields by the police in vans. One other stand-out incident relates to a neighbouring academic institution that had its windows smashed by pupils (stones in snowballs) - we then had our main hall windows smashed in retaliation - instead of dealing with the core issue (supervision and so on) - the pupils were herded into the school hall and lectured... rather than taking responsibility, the powers that be decided to discipline the pupils collectively - that was my impression, and we were told we were going to have to live with boarded up windows for quite some time."
