"We've been using this chip shop since moving in locally 15 years ago. In general it has been of a high standard. The business has changed hands at least twice in this time, and, unfortunately, the present owners have let things slide a little. I understand how hard things are at the moment, we were involved in catering for many years, yes prices rise, but cutting corners while raising prices is not conducive to customer satisfaction. We generally used Marias Fish Bar around 3 times a month. Getting fish n chips is usually a Friday/Saturday treat, but I noted that if I went at 5 - 6pm, on several occasions the chips were either dark and greasy, or shrivelled and hard. To me this seems like they were rehashed from lunchtime. Also portion sizes have been reduced, whilst the price has gone up. If I purchase at 6.30 - 7.00pm, then they have cooked the chips fresh, and I have no complaints. I would also mention, that on the odd ocassion that I have purchased a pie, they have not been very hot, in fact lukewarm, and again, I believe they are probably re-heated, as the pastry is often rock hard. It's a shame that standards have slipped. Due to this, I stopped using them for a while. But last night (a Wednesday) we decided to use them as we hadn't anything in. Big mistake. I went at 6.00pm and ordered a large cod and large chips. Generally, when they cook fish, it's to order, so you have to wait around 10 mins +. Within about 5 mins I was told my order was ready. I was somewhat surprised. Once home it was apparent why. The fish was paper thin and the chips dark and greasy and definitely reheated. It was the worst meal I'd had from there, and, as I'd eaten around half the chips before surrendering them to the bin, I paid the price with a greasy taste repeating on me all evening. Suffice to say I shall not be going back."
"Probably the best fish we've ever had really great. Slightly let down by the chips which were quite oily. Overall we'd definitely go back."
"Lovely fish and chips tonight. I don’t know if Maria’s Fish Bar is under new management, but The last few times the food hasn’t been all that great. Different staff working tonight and food packaging different. Keep it up. Great meal tonight."
"This used to be a cracking little chippy. Now their chips literally crack and snap because no one has bothered to cook them. It's almost as if the person frying has never seen a chip, and if they have it was an oven chip that was also undercooked and they think that's the aim. I don't want to be dismissive of the general chip shop, but it isn't the most complicated thing in the world to get right, but when you get it wrong like this, it is truly unacceptable. My phone did it's very best to make this look edible and I can assure you that it looks a lot better in these pictures than it does in my kitchen, the chips are almost the same colour as raw potato and the sausages...well let's just say that I'm glad they were a "treat" for the dogs, and we don't eat them either way."
"Has always been our local chippy but has gone massively downhill. This pie was rock hard and NOT EDIBLE. Same goes for the rock hard battered sausage that my brother had. I feel sick. I had haddock last week and it was slimey and discoloured. What happened to this place?"
