Reviews of Mendip Basecamp Family Campsite
"Fantastic site with good facilities Friendly helpful staff. Pitch wherever you want. Good clean facilities. Positives - Pub onsite and a cafe/shop. Cheddar Gorge is just up the road Negatives - The pub stopped serving food at 7PM because they were ‘Overwhelmed’ with orders. There was no confusion, I stood in the pub asking to buy food, and I was told they closed the kitchen because they couldn’t cope. We went to bed without tea, so you may want to prepare for this!! This is why it's not a 5-star review."
"We loved our previous experience at basecamp in 2021. This year was still great however they seem to have let their standards slip a little. There was an issue with the showers (see other reviews) - this was fine and didn't really effect us but we felt the showers themself weren't as clean as our previous visit. Staff as before were excellent. Helpful and always had a smile on their face... Sadly this is probably because none of them were having to do any litter picking! While I appreciate a campsite is mainly influenced by the people staying there I have never seen so much litter on a site! We were constantly clearing up around our pitch and as an experiment watched a bin bag left by people leaving site as we arrived... It was still there when we left. 4 days later. All in all we still had a great holiday but felt a little disappointed with Basecamp."
"We had a good time camping here with 2 young children. Great big campsite, nice views of surrounding area. Great walks through the woods. Nice little shop with some essentials in. Obviously more expensive but all on site shops are wherever you are. Very friendly and helpful stuff. Tip, the ground is full of rocks just under the grass so your normal pegs for your tent will have a hard time. Storm pegs are a good idea."
"Great campsite. Nice big fields and a marquee housing a shop, cafe, freezer and charging area. The lodge is a bonus for some food or a drink. Handily located too. The showers were hit and miss with water temp. On my last morning the water was ice cold and did not warm up. It was v dry ground when I stayed, yet everyone seemed to have a fire pit. The resulting smell of wood smoke was a bit overwhelming in the night and made it difficult to sleep. The risk of fire was v high and it may be worth doing a risk assessment on fire pits and bbqs during the current heatwave. It could do with another shower and toilet block to service the top fields. On the whole a positive experience."
