Reviews of Queen Mother Hospital for Small Animals
"Tommy was seen by your resident oncologist, Celia, on the 14 November 2022. To us she was very knowledgeable about the illness. We were advised that "cats with gastric lymphoma receiving a modified high dose COP with the addition of L-asparaginase showed a significantly longer survival. (OST 854 days, 1 and 2 year survival rate 57.1%)." Two weeks after that, she left on rotation to join the neurology team. The case was transferred to another resident oncologist, Francesco. When Celia returned to the department she did not take the case back. Tommy had chemotherapy for 4 consecutive weeks. On the 14 December 2022, Tommy had a physical examination with ultrasound and we were advised "complete response to chemotherapy". Tommy would continue his chemotherapy protocol every 3 weeks with repeat staging every 9 weeks or sooner. Tommy was seen by the Francesco on the 4 January 2023. At discharge he was concerned about Tommy losing weight and said we needed to do something if he should lose weight again. At the next reassessment on the 25 January 2023, an intern, Frances, was assigned to Tommy’s case. Tommy had lost weight again. I asked about her experience and she advised me that she was on rotation to find out which specialty she would be interested in. Francesco was in that day but he was not given Tommy’s case. The person who assigned an intern who has no knowledge on oncology, not aware of Tommy’s treatment plan, was obviously very complacent about the seriousness of Tommy’s illness. The discharge report presented to us by Frances was merely a copy of the previous one with a few amendments of which some were incorrect and it was full of errors and omissions. This report should be based on what took place at the reassessment. The oncology team had completely missed the restaging required and you did not mention the problems with the blood tests or Tommy having lost weight again. You could not have examined Tommy or looked at his case notes properly. I emailed my feedback and the clinician, Sandra, went ballistic, phoned me with accusations and threats and told me she would consider not treating Tommy because of me. You accused me of not trusting the oncology team. The untimely death of Tommy speaks for itself. You asked me to take Tommy to The Ralph. Tommy might have a better outcome if I had in the beginning. I wrote to the initial resident oncologist, Celia, to reach out for help but she did not reply to my email. Celia, you should have stepped up and helped Tommy. This department needs an overhaul with people who are committed to see through any commitment to provide best cancer treatment for the patient. You abandoned my Tommy at his second session after he was confirmed "complete response to chemotherapy". Tommy was weak and you did not even notice that. Tommy in the meantime had fluid filling his lungs and was admitted to emergency on the 10 February 2023. If you do not have the capacity to provide best care for my Tommy who was seriously ill, you should not proceed with the chemotherapy treatment plan. If Tommy was seen by an experienced resident oncologist on the 25 January, would the outcome be different? Tommy was my third cat who have died under the care of vets at this hospital. There will not be a fourth one. An organisation is only as good as the people who provide the services. Mrs Redding"
"Had to visit them in rather difficult circumstances. Front of house staff and Vets are all polite, diligent, intelligent and seem very competent. Their facilities are second to none and prices are actually lower than lots of smaller practises than are owned by corporate conglomerates. Highly Recommended."
"Great hospital with excellent facilities and great vets! Frank had the best attention from two different vets. Prices are on the higher end, though."
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff at this hospital, with a special thanks to their fantastic oncology department. I had to bring my French Bulldog for complicated heart surgery earlier in 2022. When I arrived, I was scared, unsure and thought I would be saying goodbye to my most treasured friend, but, with their expertise, outstanding care and understanding attitude they were able to help save my best friend. If you ever find yourself in my shoes, I want you to know that these people care and will do all that they can for you and your companion. Thank you for giving me more time with him, I am forever grateful for that."
"It's expensive but it's an out of hours vet for emergencies. We came in as my cat hadn't been able to keep food or water down for three days and had suddenly gone from very active to very lethargic. Our current vet had no appointments that day which was very annoying and by the evening boo wasn't looking too good. Plenty of parking and easy to get to with a satnav. There was a few hours wait after triage by a student vet but some other extremely poorly animals came in so understand why they were seen first. A vet (who I think was American?) Took boo off to look her over and came back to tell us she would try an anti sickness injection first. She didn't try to get us to spend more money on at that point unnecessary tests etc. She gave us a plan of action if the jab didn't work and thankfully it seems to have and boo is very slowly on the mend :) thank you!"
