Reviews of Wroxall Abbey Hotel
"I booked a 1 night weekend stay at Wroxall Abbey (25/02/2023). I'd like to start with the positives. The hotel building is stunning, as are the grounds and the ruins. Inside there are heaps of original features and the building and estate has a long and varied history. Our room had been refurbished to a decent standard, it was large, the bed was comfortable and the views were beautiful. The food at The Punchbowl (about 10 minutes drive away) was truly excellent and the location as a whole is rural and very pretty. Now on to the negatives, and unfortunately, there are a lot of them. Check in was very laid back with one friendly lady and another younger man who appeared to be shadowing her. Despite me making the booking, paying for the booking, greeting the check in staff and being the one to drive myself and my husband there, he was addressed when asked to provide a car registration and he was the one given our room key! Both of which I strongly object to. When he was handed the key, we weren’t given the room number or any indication of how to get to our room. Typically this can be easy to work out, but signage into the hotel is extremely poor. When we worked out we had to walk up the stairs, we were then greeted with printed out pieces of laminated paper with some room numbers on. Such a beautiful building deserves much greater attention to detail than that and it really does cheapen the hotel. Our room number wasn’t listed in any of the number ranges shown and it took us a couple of minutes to work out that behind another doorway was a further set of stairs. Again no indication of what was there, we walked up them and finally found our room. - 20 minute wait at the bar, and still none came to serve us, we ended up having to drive elsewhere for food and drink - Told I couldn’t change the flavour of ice cream that came with my dessert (despite several other options on the menu) and given no other options - My ice cream-less Chocolate Brownie dessert was stone cold and had to be taken away and heated up - Gin served in water tumbler with a different brand of tonic water each time despite ordering the same Gin - Surly attitude and bad vibes from head waiter - Restaurant/bar prices not worth the quality or service standard - 8am fire alarm on Sunday morning ruined chances of lie in and late checkout - Poor internal signage, room numbers printed off in different fonts - Variation in staffing experience and standard, 2 ladies in the restaurant were nice although 1 was clearly new to the job but the 2 different men in the restaurant, again 1 clearly new and the other head waiter, had a thinly veiled bad attitude - We weren't asked how our meal was or how our stay had been on checkout We would not recommend and would not return to Wroxall Abbey This beautiful hotel deserves better management."
"Lovely hotel recently under new ownership and undergoing alot of work. Our room was huge and well decorated. As many of the reviews have suggested, the dining room is very cold and breakfast service took a very long time. However, all of our food was tasty. Nice grounds of this historic building to have a little mooch around."
"Beautiful setting. Room was a great size and comfortable. Drinks were expensive but expected for this type of hotel. Food was amazing both at dinner and breakfast catering for my gluten free needs well. The staff were friendly and helpful. Especially the receptionist and young lad at breakfast (sorry don't know names) but both a credit to the hotel. The only poor point was it was very cold in the restaurant but understand its hard to heat such a large room. Definitely recommend. ."
"A great hotel in the most beautiful setting. Far more than I anticipated, an incredible historic building and stunning grounds. The staff were super friendly and accommodating, the rooms were lovely, bed really comfy and a great shower. Food in the restaurant was great- had a great dinner (and far too much wine and brandy). All in all a really great experience, would highly recommend."
