Reviews of Welsh Gatehouse
"It is a wonderful place for a weekend retreat or longer. Totally fantastic"
"I originally wanted to book this as a surprise birthday treat but the date was unavailable, so I booked a later date as a late treat instead. Little did I know that it was just the right weekend to book. We'd had a very tough few weeks and so when we arrived, it was as if a huge weight lifted from us as we soaked up the atmosphere of the place. Some buildings retain a certain character and this building fills you with peace, calm and happiness. I echo what everyone says about the stairs, they are very old, very narrow and very steep so it's worth bearing that in mind. The view from the tower is amazing - we were lucky to get a sunny autumn day, so we watched the sun set from the top. We climbed back up at night to look at the stars and again in the morning with a cuppa. It was amazing. The little castle has everything you need (except a frying pan) and the hosts were kind enough to supply a bottle of wine, butter, milk, Welsh cakes and chocolate. We had a brief excursion to the local pub, which was friendly, before heading back, lighting the fire and cooking a meal. It was a shame it was just for one night as our budget is limited, but it was enough to help us both shake off the traumas of the previous weeks, so we left feeling calmer and happier. It's truly a magical place and we felt lucky to have a share in just a small piece of its history. It's a memory that both my husband and I will cherish and smile over again and again."
"Beautiful historic property in South Wales! This stay is truly one-of-a-kind. Juliet is a terrific host and the accommodations are spectacular. She was super easy to communicate with, and was very flexible. You can tell she loves this property and truly cares about her guests: a welcome email; detailed directions to the location; super responsive via text as well; a welcome basket including Welsh cakes and a bottle of wine (among other things)--even complimentary post cards; and so much more! If you're looking for a romantic getaway or to be immersed in 12th century history, book a stay at The Welsh Gatehouse. The historic architecture (as seen at local 12th century Tintern Abbey as well) paired with the well maintained modern amenities of today makes for magnificent experience. This is a peaceful stay, close to local restaurants and points of interest. I would highly recommend a historic night or two at Juliet's 12th Century Welsh Gatehouse :) [See pictured: welcome basket provided by host, Juliet; original entrance gate & mini door; view from the lead rooftop lookout]"
"Booking the accommodation and an extra night was very easy. Juliet and William have thought of all our needs and allowed us to maintain our privacy, and theirs. A little gem of a find, very unique, especially the access to the turret."
"What a wonderful place to stay. We arrived around 2pm and found the information on how to access the apartment to be very accurate. On letting ourselves in we were faced by a narrow spiral staircase. This is a little tricky to get up, the steps are narrow and made of stone and wood. Don't think about trying to bring up a big case, you will fail! Up the stairs we entered the apartment and how wonderful that is. A nice big sofa facing a log burner (logs etc all to hand) and a small easy chair. A nice big table which had a great basket of treats, bread, jam Welsh cakes, wine, also some postcards and instruction manual and visitor book. The kitchen area is good with everything you would want. The fridge was kindly stocked with butter and milk. On this same floor was a basic but clean bathroom. Plenty of towels and some soap, shower bits. The bedroom is accessed by a ladder type stairs, not to be attempted after drinking the wine and best tackled sober when getting down! The bed is a double and as the ceiling is low its basically on the floor. Take care in the area, plenty of chances to bang your head! We didn't find the bed that comfy but the guest book seems to indicate we are very much in the minority. Back out of the apartment door and up the stairs some more you get to a storage/ironing room. Up again and you get a spectacular rooftop view, no high heals! The location is perfect (verh close to the old motorway but if didn't bother us) and we would come back again. Excellent."
