Reviews of Mayville Guest House
"Perfect room for my mother and myself sharing. Room 9 has a wall separating the single beds, so whilst a twin room it was almost two rooms with a shared bathroom. Excellent for friends sharing to save costs. Comfortable too with a good shower. Full of Scottish charm on the economy side with a delightful manager who looked after our every need. Very relaxed and a perfect location just moments away from the central delights of Edinburgh. I fully recommend this guest house if you are looking for comfort without spending a lot of money. When staying here ensure that you have an evening meal at Hellers Kitchen in Salisbury Place - top notch 5 stars"
"Our first real bed on our honeymoon trip, and we were both so excited for it that we almost slept through our time in Edinburgh! Tommy (the owner) let us check in a little early, and was very friendly and accomodating. The rooms are comfortable, and the decor charming. It's about a half-hour walk into town, with loads of great pubs and coffee shops on the way. Could not be happier."
"The Mayville Guest House, Minto Street, Edinburgh: It's a nice building that's reasonably decorated. First off I would make sure you have confirmation of your reservation/breakfast order to hand when checking in. Nash the current manager was only told by the boss to expect two people but no further information. We only found this out when we chased Nash down for our breakfast which he knew nothing about. He kindly directed us to a local café to get breakfast, he was reasonable enough to deduct the difference between what we had to pay and what we would of paid for breakfast from our overall bill. There was a lack of toilet tissue, this was quickly and easily resolved by asking for some more. I found the floors to be uneven and the wallpaper to be a little bubbly. It was generally clean and tidy, but don't expect a maide service as you would find in a hotel or other guest houses. The room doors are far from sound proof. I don't think this property is really a 3* stay. I got the room at a knocked down price so feel like it was a reasonable price – however, if I was to have paid the full £300GBP that was asked I would be most disappointed. Note to anyone with long hair, watch your hair in the head-board I got mine caught a few times. Oh, the windows don't open either."
"After booking at very short notice when we arrived the room was ready and cleaned to a very high standard. Then hotel was tastefully decorated having maintained many period features and furnished beautifully. The hotel benefited from having a private car park for guests which in its self would have cost as much as the room given the proximity to the city center. The staff were very attentive and polite making it a must if I were to visit Edinburgh again."
"Awful - I booked five nights on Laterooms during the Fringe for £100 a night. I know prices go up during this time but.... when I got there, I found out I'd be staying in the back section, which meant walking down a dark alleyway with no lights to reach my room most nights. The back door isn't locked, and my room key kept not locking the door properly - I didn't feel secure at all. The room was very small and cramped (fine as it was just me, but wouldn't work for a couple) with only a few pieces of furniture; bed, lamp, bedside table, dresser and very small TV. There was a kettle but no cups, spoons or teabags. £100 a night. The hallway had flies and the overall decor was very delipidated. The promised wifi did not work at all. Even worse, they have a rooster in the garden so I was woken up at 5am every morning. And, when I went to get breakfast, they said this wasn't included in the room (£100 a night, and Laterooms had said it was included) but that I could pay extra - I did this once, as £5 for one piece of brown toast and an array of packaged sponge cakes isn't, for me, a great breakfast. To be fair, the staff seemed pleasant enough when I saw them, but this place was extremely overpriced, with absolutely no facilities at all."
