"A genuine piece of ancient woodland, going back to the Doomsday Book, carefully nurtured and looked after by an enthusiastic friends group. Litter noticeably abscent ,sometimes dogs can be a problem when owners let them roam off lead. A lot of flora and fauna with some hidden gems if you know what you are looking at and where you are looking.. Pubs at either end if you walk the route out and back as a linear walk.2 pubs on route Castle on the Hill, Hindley and Gerrard Arms Aspull about half a mile after exiting from the Aspull end. The walk is just over 2 miles one way and suitable for prams and wheelchair access. There are a few gradients on route particularly over the footbridge at the Aspull entrance, also be aware that if there has been a lot of rain and in Autumn/Winter the path will become muddy. Recently been awarded as part of a nationwide network of ancient woodlands to be dedicated to her majesty the Queen in celebration of the Platinum Jubilee. The Queen's Green Canopy. Low Hall Local Nature reserve on Liverpool Road, Hindley has also been gifted 120 fruit trees as part of the celebration. Please check Low Hall out as well ,it's a hidden gem of a reserve."
