About The Oxford Bar
The Oxford Bar is not just another bar in Edinburgh. It's an establishment steeped in history, charm, and mystery. Established in 1811, this bar has been a prominent point of interest for anyone who enjoys a drink in a cozy and welcoming environment.
As you walk through the door of The Oxford Bar, you'll be greeted by a warm and friendly atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. The interior is adorned with old-fashioned wooden booths, traditional pub tables and chairs, and a classic bar with brass fittings. The walls are adorned with photographs, paintings, and memorabilia, all telling a story of the rich and colorful history of this bar.
Known as a favorite haunt of writers and literary figures, The Oxford Bar has become one of the most cherished institutions in Edinburgh. The bar's most famous regular, Ian Rankin, immortalized it in his Rebus series of novels as the watering hole of his protagonist, Detective Inspector John Rebus. Fans of the series can still be found enjoying a pint of ale or a single malt whisky in the same spot where Rebus used to sit.
But it's not just the literary history that makes The Oxford Bar a must-visit destination. The bar has an excellent selection of drinks, including a range of real ales, ciders, and lagers, and a variety of whiskeys from all over Scotland. The Oxford Bar also serves delicious pub food, from classic fish and chips to hearty steak pies, all made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
Whether you're a local looking for a relaxing spot to unwind after work or a visitor to Edinburgh looking for an authentic Scottish pub experience, The Oxford Bar is the perfect place to spend an evening. With its rich history, warm atmosphere, and excellent service, it's no wonder that The Oxford Bar has become one of the most popular bars in Edinburgh.

Reviews of The Oxford Bar
"Perfect, out of the way small bar. Fire was lit, beer quality high and all the locals friendly. Please note, the Oxford Bar does not offer food, regardless what you read elsewhere - however their nuts are unrivalled. If one of your party "needs" to shop then simply say you have somewhere to be too and slip away..."
"A small and friendly bar, tucked away from the crowds. A pub they way pubs should be; no blaring music, or fruit machines, just alcohol and talking with friends. I had a pint of Belhaven Best followed by a wee dram (Bruichladdich, The Classic Laddie), both were excellent. I have read about this bar for many a year, in the wonderful Inspector Rebus novels by Ian Rankin. It was great to sit where both great men have sat. This is Rebus' bar and I feel all the safer for it."
"I was simply on the hunt for a basic, borderline dive bar in the area.. Reading a lot of reviews, there's clearly literary history attached to this place. I know none of it. What I can tell you is that this place is tucked away on a back street of a somewhat upscale area and seems to be a nice solid neighbourhood bar. It really is nothing special on the inside but the beer is cheap, the patrons are chatty and the overall vibe of it is great. I'm a bit more curious about the history of the bar and the famous authors - perhaps next time I go I'll brush up on that before I head over."
"Great old style bar . No frills. Friendly service. Stewart 80 shillings was a decent pint. No music, no carpet, no frills , just a proper watering hole. Made famous by Rebus of course."
"Splendid afternoon sitting in the pub of Rebus's choice (and of course, Ian Rankin!)"
