Reviews of Chung Wah Supermarket
"A good selection of products. fast service and convenient location!"
"TLDR: I had a very poor experience in this store. The store manager is extremely rude and lacks good customer service. I share three better alternatives for Asian supermarkets in Liverpool at the end of my review for your conveniece. I wanted to buy a very specific flavour variation (let’s call it B) of a product that Chung Wah is selling in their store (let’s call it A). So I asked the store owner if they could get B, since they are already selling A. Her reply: "No, we only sell A". I explained that I understood that she only had A. Still, could she place a custom order for B since it is the same brand, and there was a good chance the wholesaler might have it? "No, we only sell A". I felt she didn’t understand my question, so I tried to explain my question differently. Did she know if the wholesaler was selling B, or if she could look up if B was in the wholesale catalogue, or if she could call the wholesaler and ask if they were selling B, or if they could get B from the manufacturer. "No, we only sell A". I then asked if she could point me in the right direction? If she knew any store that might sell B, or if she could give me the number of the wholesaler or manufacturer of the brand so that I could call them up myself and ask them about where I buy B. "No, I am not telling you where we buy it." I asked why she didn't want to tell me? After all, she is neither selling B, doesn't want to place a custom order for B, nor wants to ask the wholesaler if they have B in stock. “No, I am not telling you” The owner then just turned around and left. I don't get it... What does it matter if I buy B somewhere else? Why the secrecy for information that I can easily google in a minute or two? What was going on in her mind? It was such a small thing, and even a tiny amount of effort would have gone a long way. For me, this experience is not just about B. It is about feeling valued as a customer. I was buying groceries from this store at least once a week. They knew my face. What was their expectation of what would happen after showing such a negative attitude and communicating to me in this condescending tone? That I would continue to do my weekly shopping in their store? It would have been nice to buy B from Chung Wah for convenience. But after this exchange, I am going the extra mile to buy my Asian groceries elsewhere. Three recommendations for better alternatives in Liverpool if you are looking for better products and a friendlier experience: W H Lung Supermarket, L5 9TZ: This is the largest Asian supermarket in Liverpool with the largest number of unique products. Highly recommended for home cooks and professional chefs. Misu Supermarket, L1 2SP. It has a smaller selection of products than W H Lung, but the store is super central, super clean, and the team is super friendly. There is also the Renshaw Street Food Market right next door. eJoy Asian Foods, L7 7EL. This medium-sized Asian supermarket has a wide selection of almost any product you could ever need for your home kitchen. There is also a street food market inside."
"Great range of Oriental food products. I could have spent much longer exploring. Ingredients for Chinese, Japanese and other Oriental cuisine. Plenty of choice."
"As a Thai/Asian chef and growing up with Thai food , I have come here pretty much all my life as they have all of the key ingredients for anyone wanting to cook from anywhere in Asia . Fresh produce is mostly always spot on ! Their import of Thai basil never fails to impress . The options and products are phenomenal. The staff are super friendly and willing to go out of their way to help . (Here is pretty much my second home 555) I highly recommend!"
"A decent shop at the end of Chinese Arc area in Liverpool centre. The shop offers variety of Asian foods, ingredients, instant noodles, sauces, and so forth. You may find Malaysian, Thai, Indonesian, Viet, and Korean brands here, which probably difficult to find in other stores. You can walk from the Liverpool One bus station 10 minutes or take a circular bus number 26 from the station."
