Reviews of The Hathersage Centre
"I came in for the copper IUD in January. Having had the hormonal coil before, and not liked the hormonal side effects, or those of the pill, I wanted to try something none hormonal to see how my body would cope. I explained to the doctor that I had had the coil before, and found the procedure excruciating, and was feeling incredibly scared of having it done again. His response was, jokingly "ah well it isn't as painful as having babies". I brushed him off, but thought to myself how deeply inappropriate of him; how does he know I WANT to have children, especially given the context of having CONTRACEPTION fit?! Beyond assuming that because I am female my sole aim in life is to give birth, how does he know I don't have history which would affect my ability to have kids? He then proceeded to tell me how he was going to put in the hormonal coil, which my notes and myself in person had specifically said I didn't want; he did not bother to ask for my opinion. It felt like my voice did not exist in that room. I asserted that I absolutely only wanted the copper coil. I mentioned again I was worried about the pain, hoping he could offer some kind of anaesthetic. It is beyond me why women have to go through this incredibly painful and traumatic experience without... it strikes me as cruel to be honest. I also recently found out from a friend that other sexual health clinics (NHS, not private) are now offering anaesthetic. So, I'm really not sure why he did not offer this. I felt like he just wasn't taking me seriously when I discussed my past struggle with this procedure- he also refused to let my partner sit next to me during, and had him behind a curtain. Even though I repeatedly told him how frightened I was, nothing was offered to help me through this. He kept repeating his joke about how birthing a child would be worse, and I snapped and said "ideally if you do this properly I won't BE giving birth, given this is the point of the appointment". I hoped this would signal him to realise how inappropriate this recurring joke was, but it didn't- he continued making the same joke throughout the appointment. Throughout the procedure he made jokes about how the pain wasn't as bad as giving birth (he must have made this joke at least 5 times), and kept making them directly to my partner not to me during the procedure. Even when I screamed in pain he didn't stop to ask if I was okay, but kept making jokes about me my future of giving birth to my partner, laughing going "it will be worse than this!". I have never felt so demeaned and invisible in my life. My partner was confused, as I was behind a curtain screaming whilst this doctor insisted on making insensitive conversation about birthing, like my only purpose in life would be to give birth. When he measured my uterus, I screamed so loudly as it was incredibly painful, and he did not stop to ask if i was okay, or ready for the insertion- he just continued and went "I'm going to insert it now" which was equally painful. There was no duty of care or taking my pain seriously. It is worth mentioning also that I was never asked in advance of this appointment if I would be comfortable with a male doctor; given my past experience with this procedure I would have absolutely said no. I would never want a male doctor doing this procedure for me, given how painful and scary I find it; how can a male doctor empathise with me and understand my pain and fear? Overall this was a ridiculous experience, and the constant stream of birthing jokes was beyond insensitive, and made me feel like society had reverted to a time when women were only seen as child bearing objects (or maybe I am naïve to think attitudes like this are a thing of the past). He did not treat me like a person, he spoke to my partner instead of me, made no attempt to comfort or address my concerns about pain, or even show empathy or that he took me seriously. I felt like his only goal was to get me in and out and have it done as quickly as possible. The only positive was that the nurse was kind and patient."
"So so good!! I just had my copper coil/IUD put in. The front-desk staff, doctors, and nurses were so kind. They answered all my questions calmly. A bit of discomfort for two minutes was absolutely worth it for five years of protection. The nurse on duty helped me control my breathing and they joked with me throughout the process. Best NHS experience so far."
"Absolutely first class. The doctor Lizzie was so kind and understanding, and I had a complete plan to resolve my problem within half hour. I got an appointment on the second day of trying but was on the website before 8.30, it is doable but you've got to be quick."
"The worst organisation, impossible to book appt 3-4 weeks of being online at 8.20 ready. Get to appt will ALWAYS be waiting at least 40 mins past appt time without fail. But God forbid you're running late you miss your appt even though they're running 4 appts behind? The staff aren't the problem it's the booking system and time keeping, don't have 10 minute appts if you know they will each take 15-20!!!"
"So the main issue most people have is just that fact that it's hard to get an appointment. My recommendation is so make sure you're on the northern website ASAP Once 8:30 hits. You can even start loading up stuff a couple mins before to the screen just before the appointment booking part to increase your chances. If all else fails yeah try calling different clinics until one picks up and they can book you in to the nearest one. In terms of service however they are amazing. I saw a nurse named Kat and she was the most pleasant and lovely person ever. Quick help, great chats and wondering experience. Stay safe peoples!"
